Description:Fifth grade is a year of building upon previous knowledge while expanding into new areas of learning. An increased emphasis on writing is evident as students learn to address a variety of topics in a clear, well written fashion. In reading, students are shown how to look upon everything they read with new eyes, going beyond the printed word to understand the thinking behind the writing and how it relates them. Mathematics continues to emphasize the importance of basic facts while expanding knowledge of problem solving, fractions, decimals and algebra. The scientific method along with topics related to earth and space, living systems, and light and sound inform the science curriculum while the Global Awareness Technology Project in social studies allows groups to use technology to present what they’ve discovered when comparing certain aspects of ancient and modern cultures.
