The Earl L. Pulley Career
Center is one of two centers in Fairfax County Public Schools
whose primary focus is community-based career education. We
serve special education students between the ages of 16 - 21
who are referred to us by their IEP teams. We are committed
to helping students explore their career goals by providing
them with training experiences in their areas of interest.
Every Monday, students at
Pulley receive classroom instruction in Life Centered Career
Education, Self-Advocacy, Current Events, Character Education,
Reading, Daily Living
Skills,
Personal-Social Skills, and Occupational Guidance and Preparation.
However, as career education is the primary focus of our program,
Monday is the only full day students are in a traditional classroom.
Tuesday through Friday, our students leave the school almost
as quickly as they enter. By 7:30 AM, both staff and students
are out the door taking school buses and public transportation
to their jobsites. It is there, in the community, that students
continue to receive curriculum instruction and work on their
IEP goals with our cooperating employers. The unique benefit
of a program like this, is that it allows our students not
only to work on employable skills in real work settings, but
it also allows them to work on their social skills alongside
non-disabled peers.
Although many of our students
receive direct, teacher support in small groups at their jobsites,
the amount of school support each student receives is contingent
upon their needs. As our students all have different needs,
we work on progressing them to reach their fullest potential
and become as independent as possible. A number of our students
go to individual sites with intermittent (or 'drop in') support
from school staff while others receive short-term job coach
support. We even have several students who work at individual
sites receiving direct training and supervision from the employers.
We are grateful to our employers
for their dedication to our students. If not for their commitment
to public education, the success of our program would not be
possible.
Thank you for taking the
time to visit our website. If you would like a tour of our
school, please call or email us using the information on our contact
page to arrange one.
We look forward to meeting
you.
