First Grade

First grade students are have learned about different kids of trees (leaf and evergreen) as well as changes a tree undergoes as the
seasons change.  Students have learned where rain comes from and are beginning to understand evaporation and condensation.  Let your child watch as you cook on the stove and the steam rises.  Show your children the ‘clouds and rain’ that form on the inside of a pot top!

The first graders are in the middle of learning about day and night – rotation of the earth.  They have experimented with light and

temperature changes.  Talk with your children about what causes day and night and why days in the summer are longer than days in the winter.

Some wonderful websites in helping kids understand earth patterns (cycles – day and night and the water cycle) are:

http://pbskids.org/jayjay/care.curr.cl.l2.html - my favorites - let’s think about it day and night…very kid friendly!

http://hea-www.harvard.edu/ECT/the_book/index.html - hands on astronomy for kids – great site!
