Developmental Objectives for Classroom Guidance





 

Kindergarten and First Grade

Help students to:

1) Develop a positive, realistic self-concept.

2) Understand and express feelings in constructive ways.

3) Develop an understanding that people work and can enjoy their work.

4) Develop an awareness of themselves as workers in school and at home.

5) Develop positive work habits and attitudes for tasks in school.

6) Share and cooperate in group tasks and activities.

7) Develop the understanding that one can make a mistake and still be a competent person.

8) Develop an awareness of themselves and others as decision makers.

9) Develop personal safety (i.e., caution with strangers, safety on the school bus).

10) Develop an awareness of, and appreciation for, people different from themselves.
 
 

Second Grade

Help students to:

1) Continue to develop a positive, realistic self-concept and self-respect.

2) Develop respect and appreciation for people different from themselves.

3) Develop understanding and skills for maintaining effective relationships with peers and adults.

4) Develop increased self-discipline and responsibility for their own behavior.

5) Continue to develop positive work habits, skills and attitudes.

6) Understand the roles and contributions of workers in school, at home and in the community.

7) Develop an awareness of themselves and others as decision makers.

8) Continue to develop personal safety.

9) Cope effectively during a crisis situation as needed.
 
 

Third Grade

Help students to:

1) Learn that feelings, goals and behaviors are interrelated.

2) Accept increasing responsibility for behavior and its outcomes.

3) Take responsibility for initiating and completing tasks.

4) Understand that school experiences and learning help to develop skills and behaviors needed for life and work.

5) Learn that an individual's effectiveness is directly related to the ability to work cooperatively with others.

6) Develop an awareness of the kinds of decisions they and others have made.

7) Understand that an individual's work choices and roles are influenced by personal characteristics, such as abilities, feelings, attitudes, values, interests, likes,
dislikes and environmental factors.

8) Acquire understanding of the factors that influence choice of personal goals (i.e., feelings, values, attitudes, interests, abilities, likes, dislikes and environmental
conditions).

9) Continue to promote personal safety (i.e., develop a personal support network).

10) Cope effectively and listen for directions during a crisis.

11) Increase awareness of the needs of people different from themselves.
 
 

Fourth Grade

 Help students to:

1) Learn the decision-making and problem-solving processes.

2) Assume greater responsibility for making choices and decisions.

3) Understand self in relations to others, school and community institutions.

4) Recognize that various work roles require certain skills, personal qualities and kinds of education and training.

5) Learn to participate effectively in group decision-making and problem-solving.

6) Explore personal interests and abilities.

7) Acquire increased social skills and understandings.

8) Understand that personal interests and abilities are considerations in the choice of work roles.

9) Acquire test-taking skills.

10) Continue to promote personal safety (i.e., taking care of self, awareness of community resources).

11) Follow directions during a crisis situation as needed.

12) Expand awareness and appreciation of people different from themselves.
 
 

Fifth Grade

Help students to:

1) Learn communication skills for interacting with others, emphasizing listening and responding techniques.

2) Learn to cope with expectations of peers and adults.

3) Relate personal abilities, interests and characteristics to work choices.

4) Apply the decision-making and problem-solving processes.

5) Learn study and test-taking skills.

6) Increase self-esteem by recognizing unique abilities and achievements.

7) Promote personal safety (i.e., at home alone, of physical body).

8) Become knowledgeable about substance abuse prevention.

9) Understand and follow directions during a crisis.

10) Continue to expand awareness and appreciation of people different from themselves.
 
 

Sixth Grade

Help students to:

1) Understand and learn to cope with intellectual, emotional, social and physical changes in the transition from childhood to adolescence.

2) Understand self in relation to the peer group.

3) Take greater responsibility for personal behavior and decisions.

4) Recognize that career development is an ongoing life process.

5) Learn test-taking and study skills.

6) Prepare for the transition from elementary and intermediate school.

7) Promote personal safety of self and others (i.e., care of younger children, protection of physical body and maintenance of emotional well-being).

8) Learn about specific drugs and what effects they may have.

9) React appropriately during a crisis.

10) Continue to expand awareness and appreciation of people different from themselves.
