Grades five and six at Providence Elementary have the opportunity to begin learning Latin, the language that almost everyone spoke centuries ago and that is hardly ever spoken today. Although it isn’t spoken today, it greatly influences how we speak today: more than half of our vocabulary is Latin-based. So many aspects of our culture are Latin-based. Our literature, sciences, medicine, politics, architecture and even road building take as their model, the early Roman Empire and its ways.
The goals of the Latin Foreign Language Program are:
· To support grades three through six in their essential content areas · To develop and increase cognitive skills through Latin vocabulary · To increase reading comprehension through deeper word understanding · To promote global awareness and cross-cultural understanding · To develop increased functional proficiency with each year of study · To meet and surpass district, state and national foreign language standards
