Scholastic presents a reading intervention program to boost the reading skills of older students who read below grade level. It is a research-based teaching tool designed to:

  • deliver individualized, adjusted reading instruction to move students to grade level.
  • provide practice and application of skills in multiple contexts to increase achievement. The contexts include interactive software (CDs) and motivating literature (audio books as well as paperbacks).
  • support and motivate students as they progress toward becoming lifelong readers and learners.

The 90-Minute Instructional Model

Whole Group Instruction
Small Group Rotations
Whole Group Wrap-Up
(20 minutes)
(60 minutes)
(10 minutes)

The teacher begins sessions by providing instruction in reading, writing, and/or vocabulary to the whole class.

Small Group Instruction

The teacher uses the student workbook and/or worksheets for differentiated instruction to introduce high interest topics to the entire class.

Read 180 Software

Students work independently on the computers, using the Read180 software to practice individualized skills.

Modeled and Independent Reading

Students read high interest paperbacks or listen to recorded books to build fluency and comprehension skills.

The wrap-up session gives students a chance to ask questions and/or gives the teacher an opportunity to summarize the day’s activities.

The program is excellent for delayed and failing readers, students with learning disabilities, special education students and ESOL students. Skills addressed include decoding, automatic word recognition, reading fluency, comprehension of text, vocabulary and spelling.

All instruction is delivered in small groups or individually. Classes do not exceed 15 students.
