Fundamental Concepts of MYP

Holistic Learning
This concept requires that members of the IB Middle Years Program learning community work to understand the interconnectedness of knowledge. Holistic learning also requires that the school plan for the development of the child beyond academic needs to include emotional and social development.

Communication
Communication is a key objective as it supports understanding and allows students to demonstrate knowledge. The MYP requires students to develop two languages, their primary language of instruction, English in the United States, and a second language. Additionally, students learn about non-verbal forms of communication in their studies as they explore different modes of thinking and expression through languages, the arts, and communication technology.

Intercultural Awareness
This concept asks that schools support the development of student’s knowledge about their own and other cultures. In developing knowledge about cultures and becoming aware of similarities and differences among various cultures, students learn tolerance and respect for others.
