3-Dimensional Paper Shelters
In Art class, fifth graders have been learning about artists and architects who work with nature to design alternative shelters. Students drew natural objects from observation and then transformed their sketches into architectural models for shelters using three dimensional cut paper techniques.
Ceramic Vessels with Impressed Designs
In Art class, fifth graders have been talking about ancient writing systems such as Hieroglyphics used by the Ancient Egyptians and pictorial writing systems used by the Mayans. Each student was then asked to create their own personal writing system on a slab of clay by impressing objects into the wet clay. After that the slab of clay was rolled to form a cylinder. The students had the choice of creating either a flat slab base for their vessel or a tripod base. Finally, students used garden glazes in earth-tone colors to glaze their clay vessels.
