Special Education

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to providing special education students with opportunities along a continuum of services that offers access to and participation in the activities of the school and community environments as appropriate to the age and educational needs of the student.

Fairfax County Public Schools upholds the principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as they support the rights of students with disabilities to have decisions regarding their individual instructional program made through the collaboration of parents who know their child best and professional educators who have knowledge of instructional practices and experience in guiding students with disabilities to become productive citizens.

Across the continuum of special education services, Fairfax County Public Schools serves students with one or more of the following identified disabilities:

Autism Other Health Impairment
Developmental Delays Specific Learning Disability
Emotional Disability Speech and Language
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Impairment
Mental Retardation Severe and Profound Disability
Orthopedic Impairment Traumatic Brain Injury
  Visual Impairment

The Special Education Department at Oakton High School services students identified with special needs. The curriculum for students with disabilities is based on the Fairfax County Schools Program of Studies (POS) and the student's individualized education program (IEP). Educational goals for each student are determined through the IEP process.

Courses

Basic Skills Resource
This elective course is designed to allow teachers the necessary flexibility for meeting the diverse needs of secondary students. Students enrolled in this course receive the equivalent of one period instruction and earn an elective credit.

Continuum of Services in Academic Subjects
Services are based on students' individual needs and may range from smaller class settings with significant modifications to support in the general education curriculum as the least restrictive environment.
