The Family & Consumer Science program focuses on the development of management skills needed throughout the life span. The program is committed to empowering students to fulfill individual family, community and work roles to achieve a balance in the interaction among those roles in diverse global society. The relationship between work and family is the unique focus.
Mission
The mission of the Family and Consumer Sciences program is to assist students:
- To develop knowledge and skills that support healthy, functioning individuals in family and work roles.
- To develop the knowledge, skills, and ethical behaviors needed for employment success.
- To develop and apply critical thinking skills.

Courses
FITNESS AND FOOD (822833)
Grades: 9 to 12, 1/2 Credit, Lab fee
n this foods lab oriented class, the students learn to plan, prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks. The students learn to select and use the best equipment for the task at hand. This course is designed to focus on making choices that promote wellness and good health while analyzing relationships between psychological and social needs and food choices. The program helps identify strategies to promote optimal nutrition and wellness. Fitness activities complete the wellness picture. The basic skills of math, science, reading and communications will be highlighted when appropriate in the content.
GOURMET FOODS (8249)
Grades 10 to 12, 1/2 Credit, Lab fee
This foods lab course provides an opportunity for students to increase skills in planning, preparing and serving individual dishes and meals. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of nutritious, appetizing, and attractive meals. Consumer and time management skills related to life style and career choices are studied.
INTRODUCTION TO INTERIOR AND FASHION DESIGN (825832)
Grades 9 to 12, 1/2 Credit
This course focuses on the principles of design, design types and vocabulary, color theory, psychological and physiological aspects of color, cultural impact on the environment, decision-making skills, utilization of space, and development of artistic skills. In interior design, environmental components, lighting, accessories, energy conservation, furnishings and equipment selection are studied. In fashion design all aspects of clothing, apparel, and textiles are experienced through garment design and construction. Career development and careers related to design are explored. The basic skills of math, science, communications and the arts will be highlighted when appropriate in the content.
INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY (825832)
Grades 10 to 12, 1/2 Credit, Lab fee
This lab-focused course allows students to explore international and American regional cuisine and cultures through the planning, preparing and serving of recipes and meals. Specific foods, ingredients, and methods of preparation unique to a variety of cultures are studied. Cultural, political, economic, geographic, religious, and nutrition issues related to international food choices are studied.
