SOL Test Preparation Resouces
Beginning in the spring of 2012, students at Oakton ES will be taking their science and social studies SOL tests online. As of the 2012-2013 school year, all SOL tests will be administered online for all students in grades 3-6.
This short 15-minute video will show you all you need to know about TestNav, the online SOL testing environment. TestNav can not be used at home, but students will become familiar with it by using the ePAT practice testing software at school (and at home). IMPORTANT: When using TestNav at school, students will NOT need to launch the program or enter an address/URL -- the testing computers will automatically go into TestNav. Also, you may not see all of the on-screen tools shown in the "Math and Science Tools" section of the video. |

ePAT (electronic practice assessment tool) is software that recreates the online SOL testing environment. If you'd like to practice at home, click the link to the left to download the ePAT Launcher software as well as a variety of practice tests (from previous years' released SOL tests). ** If you have a Mac, click here to access the Mac ePAT installers ** IMPORTANT: After you install the ePAT Launcher, when you try to install the tests, it will ask you where you saved it -- this means where the ePAT program was installed! On a Windows computer, this will be in the Local Disk (C:) -- Program files. On a Mac, this will be in the Applications folder. |

These practice items provide examples of the new content and increased rigor represented by the 2009 SOL and illustrate the new Technology-Enhanced Item (TEI) types for grades 6-8, Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. Technology-Enhanced Items are items which are presented in various formats that allow students to indicate their responses in ways other than multiple-choice format. IMPORTANT: You need to first install the ePAT Launcher to be able to view these practice items. |

This tool provides practice for the 5th grade Writing SOL (short paper). It does not include a prompt, but simply mimics the online testing environment and gives students a chance to practice using the online tools. |

| The Virginia Department of Education site contains PDFs of released SOL tests from spring 2010 for reading, math, and science. These released tests do not represent the increased rigor of future tests, which are based on the updated 2009 SOLs. | |
| SOLpass provides a variety of online activities to help review the content of the social studies and science SOLs. Login with the password oakton. | |
| Jefferson Lab has a variety of math and science practice tests. These tests are helpful for reviewing basic information. However, the rigor of the SOL tests are increasing and students will need to have more than a rote understanding of concepts. Beginning in 2012, students will be asked to do more application and critical thinking when taking an SOL test. |
