North Springfield Elementary School, located just inside the Beltway off Braddock Road, provides an instructional program that ensures academic achievement in a learning environment that fosters social and moral development. The school builds a sense of community that supports parent and child involvement and a celebration of learning. The mission and goals for North Springfield are developed through collaboration among teachers, parents, and administrators. Programs support inclusion of all students and meet the needs of an instructionally diverse student body. Schoolwide priorities emphasize student achievement in language arts and mathematics and develop valued character qualities. Reading programs focus on the three cueing systems of meaning, language, and phonics. Writing instruction stresses the process of revising, editing, and proofreading. Emphasis in mathematics is placed on critical thinking and problem solving using a hands-on approach with manipulatives and application of skills to real-life opportunities. Technology is woven into instruction at all instructional levels as a vital learning tool and a means to access and analyze information. The development of valued character qualities is an underpinning of all learning. Our students are valued contributors to a school community that challenges individual potential, nurtures moral values, and develops the social skills necessary for future success. This commitment is visible in the achievements of our students, the climate of warmth and caring throughout the school, and the impressive quality of student performance in music, art, and physical education. The dynamic and active PTA coordinates a variety of activities including family fun fair, movie night, pizza dinner, holiday breakfast, and family technology evenings. North Springfield Elementary has enjoyed broad parental support, and it continues to maintain a special place in the hearts of North Springfield community members.
