Our Mission Statement:   The mission of Navy Library Media Center is to ensure that the students and staff are independent and effective users of information.  The program fosters information handling skills and reading enjoyment.

Student Access:  The library media center open during school hours for circulation of books, reading for pleasure, research in small or large groups, and for class activities.
Grades K-2 have a weekly library lesson and time for checking out books.  Grades 3-5 have an alternating weekly library lesson and time for checking out books.  Sixth grade lessons are scheduled, as needed.  All students have access to the library at any time during school hours with teacher permission.

Check Out:
Navy’s library circulates an average of over 3,000 books per month.
            Kindergarten – 1 Book
            1st and 2nd Grade – 2 Books
            3rd – 6th Grade – 3 Books

Magazines may be checked out over-night to students in grades 3-6.

Book Fair:
Our annual book fair is held at the end of October, in coordination with the Fall Festival.
Scholastic Book Fairs provides quality books, activities, computer software for students to purchase to encourage reading among the students.
Profits from the fair are used to purchase new books and equipment for the library.
Parent volunteers help with all aspects of managing the book fair.

Virginia Reader’s Choice:
Each year Navy participates in the Virginia Reader’s Choice Program.  This program is sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association to promote life long reading.
Students are encouraged to read at least 4 books (on one level) from a list of 10 titles.  The books are available in the library on 3 different levels:  Primary (K-2), Elementary (3-5), and Middle (5-6).
Students who have read 4 of the 10 books on any list or have had 4 of the 10 books read to them, are eligible to vote for their favorite Virginia Reader’s Choice Book.  The voting takes place the last week in March.  School results and state results are announced on WNES morning news.
