Charles Sabatier, 2012 FCPS Teacher of the Year!
Charles Sabatier, who serves as the science department chair at Mount Vernon, has won the FCPS Teacher of the Year Award and the Washington Post Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award for educational excellence, which is presented annually to a teacher from each school division in the Washington metropolitan area. Seven MVHS Students Attend FEA Conference!
Seven MVHS students attended the Second Annual Virginia Future Educators Association (FEA) Conference. The students entered seven of the eight competitions and presented a workshop. MVHS students won five individual awards and two club awards. MVHS students won more awards than any other school. Go Majors!

Representatives from Invisible Children!
Representatives from Invisible Children, including a Invisible Children representative from Uganda, visited MVHS and told the students how they can help stop to stop LRA violence in Central Africa by becoming involved in our political system. Students asked questions and wrote letters to their representatives in Congress. Go Majors!

MVHS National Business Honor Society installs new officers and new members!
MVHS National Business Honor Society installs new officers and new members. MVHS is one of only three high schools in Fairfax County to have a chapter of this prestigious national honor society. The National Business Honor Society recognizes high school juniors or seniors who have completed or is currently enrolled in his/her third business course and has a 3.0 (overall) and 3.5 (business course) GPA.

The Mount Vernon Majors varsity wrestling team!
The Mount Vernon Majors varsity wrestling team improved its record to (30 – 3) over the weekend at the Dundalk Duals near Baltimore. The Majors avenged a narrow 1 point defeat at the same tourney last season. This year they finished first as a team with a record of 8 - 0. Placing first individually for the Majors were John Victoria, Cody Marino, Jaelen Gadson, Dusty Floyd, Xavier Craig, Nathan Haro, and Vika Mathias.

U.S. Marine Corps Marathon and the MVHS Marine Corps JROTC unit!
The MVHS Marine Corps JROTC unit provided support to the Fisher House water station at the U.S. Marine Corps Marathon. Fisher House provides housing for military families while services members are receiving medical care. All Fisher House Team members received a Fisher House volunteer t-shirt and cow hat. Way to go Majors!

The Marine Corps JROTC unit at Mount Vernon High School celebrated the 236th Birthday of the Marine Corps with a cake cutting ceremony.
The Marine Corps JROTC unit at Mount Vernon High School celebrated the 236th Birthday of the Marine Corps with a cake cutting ceremony. At this ceremony, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Eugene J. Coleman III received the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. The Legion of Valor is the highest award presented to cadets in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Cadet Coleman has received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. Go Majors!

It's Academic!
A team of outstanding students from Mt. Vernon High School, Meron Gosaye, Rachel Nelson, and Elizabeth Portaluppi, competed with teams from Oxon Hill High School and Annandale High School on IT'S ACADEMIC, the nation's foremost high school quiz program. The competition was spirited and Annandale High School won the match. The program will air Saturday, November 26, at 11:00 AM on NBC4, Channel 4.

IT'S ACADEMIC which has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as "the world’s longest-running television quiz program," is now celebrating its 51st year on the air.

MVHS and WWMS Students Visit with NASA Astronauts!
MVHS and WWMS Students Visit with NASA Astronauts. Mount Vernon High School and Walt Whitman Middle School students visited the Headquarters of NASA in downtown Washington, DC. Students had a personal meeting with astronauts, Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialist Rex Walheim, who flew on the final mission of the space shuttle Atlantis. The astronauts explained some of the challenges they faced on the mission and responded to curious questions from the students regarding food, bathrooms, and sleeping. The students left the meeting excited and dreaming of someday going on mission to space. Way to go Majors!
