The Culinary Arts program at MVHS had its Grand Opening today. The Culinary Arts program is dedicated to providing students a working knowledge of classical culinary techniques. Through lecture, hands-on work, and projects the students learn the skills needed for a career in the food service industry. Training in sanitation, hot food production, meat identification and fabrication, pantry, breakfast cookery, purchasing, and basic culinary skills is offered. Curriculum also includes culinary math, field trips, and competitive events.

The future IT professionals also toured the USPTO's Data Center and Helpdesk facilities; heard an overview of the agency's mission; participated in an executive round table with the Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology and participated in other interesting IT Shadow Day presentations. The USPTO hosts provided a valuable professional growth experience for the students, demonstrating how the agency effectively uses IT to fulfill its mission.

Assistant Superintendent Barbara M. Hunter presented a WebStar award to Anne McCracken, web curator and principal Nardos King and Asst. Principal Esther Manns of Mount Vernon High School. The new FCPS WebStar Awards will be awarded three times each year by the Department of Communications and Community Outreach to the web curators of three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school for school web sites that best demonstrate the following criteria: usefulness of content, clarity of design, ease of navigation, and adherence to FCPS web policies.
