The MVHS Boys JV Soccer team traveled to Washington D.C.
The MVHS Boys JV Soccer team traveled to Washington D.C. June 4th via the metro rail to watch the DC United professional soccer game. The boys enjoyed the ride into D.C. the game and camaraderie. Coach Sabatier stated that, "this is a great experience for some of our kids to not only experience the game but getting around northern Virginia and DC on the metro". The sponsors Coach Sabatier, Coach Donohue and Coach Ruelas received many compliments on the way the team represented themselves, the school and the MV community.

Fairfax College Partnership Program!
Mount Vernon students Lytia and Octavia were recognized for their participation in the Fairfax College Partnership Program in a ceremony at the Fairfax County Government Center on May 19. The College Partnership program is a collaboration involving colleges and universities, corporate members of the Fairfax County Public Schools Education Foundation, Inc., parents, and the school system that encourages high academic achievement and prepares students for success in college. Project Discovery!
The 16th Project Discovery Annual Student Recognition Banquet was held on Friday, May 15th at Hyatt Fair Lakes in Fairfax. Many Mount Vernon High School seniors were awarded scholarships based on their participation in the program, academic achievement and an essay. Scholarships ranged from 1500 to 200 dollars. Our awardees were: Robert, Megan, Kandice, Khala, Shajuana, Shamaila, Solace, Mercedes, Javier, Abigail, and Doreen. Mount Vernon seniors Robert and Megan were Masters of Ceremonies for the Banquet that included Project Discovery students from Falls Church, J.E.B. Stuart, MVHS, West Potomac and George Mason high schools. Solace was in charge of recognizing special guests and volunteers. Kandice and Khala gave moving reflections on the impact of Project Discovery on their life. Project Discovery encourages students to achieve educational excellence and pursue college education. For the past 5 years 100% of Project Discovery's graduating seniors have enrolled in post-secondary education. Project Discovery is a partnership among the county, FCPS, colleges and universities, and area businesses and families.

Chenise Lytrelle Williams!
On April 28th Mrs. Bloomquist's 9th grade English students, along with friends from Ms. Clark, Mr. Young, Ms. Bosch, and Ms Lashley's English classes, celebrated the end of National Poetry Month with a visit from a special guest speaker: Chenise Lytrelle Williams. Ms. Williams is a writer, poet, educator and motivational speaker. She is also the founder of the Anointed Publishing Company. Students had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Williams about poetry, the writing process and opportunities in professional writing. Ms. Williams wowed students with recitations of her favorite poems. Several students also recited their own poems and received a free, autographed copy of Ms. Williams latest book, Kaleidoscope.

The MVHS morning news crew spent a day at WTTG, Fox News Channel 5!
The MVHS morning news crew spent a day at WTTG, Fox News Channel 5. Tony Perkins, news anchor and weather personality of "Good Morning Washington" and a Mt. Vernon High School alumnus, invited the morning news crew to tour the Fox studio and production areas. The crew members watched the live production of the 11:00 a.m. news, met several on-air personalities, and spoke to the news team about preparing for careers in the communication industry.

Dr. Godfrey Honored!
Roxie V. Godfrey, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Mount Vernon High School, has been selected as the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year!!! Dr. Godfrey was formally honored at the 2009 Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences State Conference, April 24th in Richmond, Virginia. She will also be honored at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences National Conference, June 26th, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Grand Opening for the MVHS Culinary Arts Cafe!

The Culinary Arts program at MVHS had its Grand Opening today. The Culinary Arts program is dedicated to providing students a working knowledge of classical culinary techniques. Through lecture, hands-on work, and projects the students learn the skills needed for a career in the food service industry. Training in sanitation, hot food production, meat identification and fabrication, pantry, breakfast cookery, purchasing, and basic culinary skills is offered. Curriculum also includes culinary math, field trips, and competitive events.

Information Technology (IT) Job Shadow Day!
Five Mount Vernon High School students traveled to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a half-day information and networking session in observance of "Information Technology (IT) Job Shadow Day." During their visit, the students saw first-hand the innovative IT technologies being used by the USPTO, engaged in lively talks with USPTO IT staff, and saw what an actual federal IT work environment looks like.

The future IT professionals also toured the USPTO's Data Center and Helpdesk facilities; heard an overview of the agency's mission; participated in an executive round table with the Chief Information Officer and Chief Technology and participated in other interesting IT Shadow Day presentations. The USPTO hosts provided a valuable professional growth experience for the students, demonstrating how the agency effectively uses IT to fulfill its mission.

Mount Vernon FEA Awarded Second Place in Denver!
Five members of the Mount Vernon Future Educators Association attended the National FEA Conference in Denver on February 13-15. They heard two terrific motivational teachers speak – Aaron Davis and Ron Clark - and attended several inspiring workshops. All five students plan to become teachers. In competition the club extended their three year winning streak by earning second in the highly competitive scrapbook contest. In 2007 Mount Vernon placed in the Top Ten and in 2008 they were first. The FEA sponsor is Beverly Card.

Renaissance Café a SNAP!
Today 12 students highlighted over 20 poems and showed their literary talents at the Renaissance Café. There were over 50 students whom all behaved wonderfully and enjoyed their fellow Majors' performance. Gabriel served as a "Daddy-O" of an Master of Ceremonies, keeping the program flowing and everyone engaged!

Mount Vernon High School students place third in the Black History Forum!
Congratulations to Noelle (Team Coach), Kaila, Breya and Stephen for their outstanding performance. The goal of the Forum is to assist our youth in learning about African - American contributions to their community and the world. The students use their after school and weekends hours to prepare over a three month period for this rigorous academic competition on African-American history between local area high school students representing their specific high school. It is sponsored by the Burke-Fairfax Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and is free to the public. Way to go Majors!

Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Tour!
The "ABRAHAM LINCOLN: SELF-MADE IN AMERICA" BICENTENNIAL TOUR a mobile museum from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois visited Mount Vernon High School (MVSH) on February 5, 2009. Students from MVHS and the Aquinas Montessori School had an opportunity to visit the museum. The mobile museum exhibit explores the life and accomplishments of Abraham Lincoln the 16th President of the United States.

On January 22nd, 2009 the Mount Vernon High School Drama Department participated in the Virginia High School League one-act festival competition at JEB Stuart High School. MVHS Choirs Perform at the Kid's Inaugural Concert!
On Monday, January 19, members of Mount Vernon High School's Performing Choirs performed at the Kids' Inaugural: We Are The Future Concert. The MVHS choirs sang back up for "High School Musical" star, Corbin Bleu at the concert held at the Verizon Center in Washington. Mrs. Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden hosted the concert. The concert honoring military families was broadcast on The Disney Channel; it is still available for viewing on the website www.Disney.com.

Mount Vernon High School website has received a WebStar Award!

Assistant Superintendent Barbara M. Hunter presented a WebStar award to Anne McCracken, web curator and principal Nardos King and Asst. Principal Esther Manns of Mount Vernon High School. The new FCPS WebStar Awards will be awarded three times each year by the Department of Communications and Community Outreach to the web curators of three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school for school web sites that best demonstrate the following criteria: usefulness of content, clarity of design, ease of navigation, and adherence to FCPS web policies.
