The Key Club Officers for the 2008-2009 school-year attended the Key Club Capital District convention in Richmond, Virginia. They attended workshops on leadership, public speaking, and the duties of a Key Club officer. They also had the opportunity to meet other Key Club members from schools throughout Virginia.

Mount Vernon High School students, J.Cunningham and W. Beale, won first place in the Fairfax County Youth Video contest in the High School category for their musical video, Checking Out. You can view the video by clicking here Checking Out (The Musical). The video stars J. Cunningham, W. Beale, B. Marrone, A. Juola, P. Bryant, C. Eason, Ms Bryant, Mrs. Cunningham (Academic Boosters President), and Mr. Donahue (English teacher and one of our junior class sponsors). At the awards ceremony, one of the judges commented that their video was one of the best he had seen in his 7 years of judging!
B. Badley of the Mount Vernon High School baseball team has been selected as the WJLA (channel 7) Athlete of the Week! You can view the video here.
The Pep Rally held on April 11th celebrated the winter sports teams and featured MVHS dancers.

Two MVHS students, Wesley and Stefanie, competed at the 2008 Virginia State Science Fair held at George Mason University. Wesley and Stefanaie reached this level of competition by placing first in their categories at the Regional Science Fair 2 weeks earlier. At the Virginia State Science Fair, Wesley received an honorable mention for his project, Effect of Bubble Size on Tsunami Size in the Physics and Astronomy category. This was the only honorable mention awarded in the largest category in the fair, effectively placing Wes 4th in the state. Additionally, the Virginia Dental Association awarded him a cash prize for the humanitarian aspects of his project.
Students at Mount Vernon enjoyed shopping at the PTA special Valentine's Day sale. Thank you PTA!
On February 13, 2008 the Key Club sponsored the Mount Vernon Red Cross blood drive. Over 120 students signed up to donate blood. Way to go Majors!

Mt. Vernon High School placed 2nd at the 24th Annual Black History Forum on Sunday, February 10, 2008. This event took place at Flint Hill School in Vienna, Virginia. On February 14, 2008 Mount Vernon held the Winter Honor Assembly. Students were recognized for their academic achievement in the second quarter of the school year. Mount Vernon Students Help the Envioronment!
Information Technology students Anthony, Jack, Armin, Abraham, and Gustavo are several of the many students who comprised refurbishment teams to help the environment. Using various antiquated components from outdated machines, the students salvaged and rebuilt three computers.

MVHS Art Students are Awarded Gold Keys!
Scholastics Arts Competition is an art and writing competition that students, grades 7-12, can participate at the school, regional, and national level. Such notable winners include Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, and Andy Warhol. This year, almost 20 Mount Vernon High School art students advanced to participate at the regional level.
Four Mount Vernon students were recognized at the regional level, three of which were awarded gold keys, the highest award in the competition. Gold key winners will go on to participate at the national level of adjudication. Wil was awarded a Certificate of Merit in computer art, Kristina was awarded a gold key in painting, Sterling was awarded a gold key in ceramics and glass, and Annie was awarded a gold key for her work in photography.
Way to go Majors!

December Group of the Month - Mandy, Carolyn, Chelsea and Emma!
For a Girl Scout project, the girls designed and built the beautiful rose garden in our school courtyard. The rose garden includes a sundial, rose bushes, stepping stones and a plaque to honor the memory of John Frerichs. The girls also rebuilt the pond area with a working pump and fountain.

For the second year in a row the Mount Vernon High School choirs have participated in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. event held in our community. The Madrigals sang a song with a Hebrew text expounding on the necessity for us to work together as one nation,"Tikkum Olam." The choirs combined to sing "No Man is An Island" relating the fact that we all depend on one another and benefit from positive and progressive interaction with other people no matter what their social or economic circumstances.

Mount Vernon High School recently won runner-up in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Bowl competition held at Edison High School on January 5th. Although the Mount Vernon team lost to Madison HS in the play-offs, it was the best Scholastic Bowl showing for MVHS in nearly 10 years. Congratulations to the team and to coaches Glen Peppel and Kimberly Culp!

The Junior Class at Mount Vernon HS was able to meet the co-hosts of Mythbusters and ask them questions when the cast of Mythbusters visited Mount Vernon HS on Monday, January 14. A junior at Mount Vernon HS, Joshua Farmer, won a Mythbusters contest; the prizes were a Dell computer for Joshua, a visit to to Joshua's school and $5000 for Joshua's school. Way to go Joshua!

Secretary of Education, Margaret Spillings, Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, and Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutierrez held a press conference at Mount Vernon High School (MVHS) on October 30, 2007 to commend MVHS and Fairfax County Public Schools for the work the community is doing to equip schools to prepare for disasters and to issue new brochures on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Members of the Key and Ecology clubs worked at Woodley Hills park on Saturday, October 27 as a part of Volunteer Fairfax. They pulled roots, cleared brush, and planted over 130 plants. Way to go Majors!

On Friday, October 5th over seventy volunteers from Ernst and Young, an international accounting and business services firm, spent the day at Mount Vernon High School advising seniors on career advancement, interview skills and resume building and working in the greenhouse courtyard. The day was a huge success; our seniors gained valuable, up-close and personal information from the employees of Ernst and Young and significant progress was made in renovating the courtyard.
