Mount Eagle Art

Art is an important part of the educational program at Mt. Eagle. Students have the opportunity to think critically, solve problems, work in cooperative groups, appreciate different cultures, imagine and create. Three main areas of focus are:

1. learning about famous artists and art styles
2. developing skills in creating works of art
3. learning to appreciate art

Although each grade has it’s own set of Program of Studies Objectives, all students learn to use a variety media such as paint, clay, drawing utensils, printmaking, construction paper and scissors to create 2 and 3 dimensional works of art. Many of the art projects are an extension of lessons taught in science and social studies, therefore there is close collaboration between the art teacher and the classroom teacher. Language Arts is integrated in the art classroom through the use of response journals and literature. Mt. Eagle participates in several art contests such as the Mt. Vernon Lion’s Peace Poster Contest and Fairfax County’s Annual Safe and Drug Awareness Bookmark Contest in order to spotlight students work. In March, several students’ art work is displayed in the community to celebrate March as Youth Art Month. There is also an ongoing exhibit of student art work displayed in the halls of Mt. Eagle to promote positive self esteem of all students. All in all art is a favorite subject for many Mt. Eagle students!
