Purpose of Adult Alternative High School

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) supports three adult/alternative high schools. Bryant (Alexandria), Pimmit Hills (Falls Church), and Mountain View.  These schools offer programs designed to help students whose life circumstances could result or have resulted in an interruption of their education or in their dropping out of school. The adult/alternative high school population consists of students who need a flexible or extended program to accommodate their work or family requirements, who may be pregnant or parenting, students for whom English is a second language, or older students who are returning to finish courses to earn their diploma. In addition, adult/alternative high schools accept students who are based at another school and wish to accelerate their educational program. Students are also administratively placed through a records review process or by the School Board. Students with severe discipline problems are not a target population for these schools.

The Mountain View Mission

Mountain View School provides students with a challenging learning environment that is safe, secure and accepting. The Mountain View community values the individuality of its members and strives to provide an educational setting that encourages creativity, critical thinking and leadership. Clearly stated goals, aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Fairfax County Program of Studies, establish the framework for academic achievement. Faculty and staff monitor student progress in a variety of ways to meet individual needs and to ensure academic and personal success. Mountain View School recognizes learning as a lifelong process that begins with the building of a solid academic foundation and continues with the development of essential career and transition skills that prepare students to meet the challenges of the 21 st century.
