COURSE COMPETENCIES

Students will demonstrate successful completion of the Fairfax County standard requirements.  The FCPS standards are as follows:

Standard One: Demonstrate competency in many movement forms and acquire proficiency in one self-selected lifetime sport or activity.
Standard Two: Analyze movement concepts and principles to enhance motor skill acquisition and performance.
Standard Three: Plan and describe a personal fitness and wellness program.
Standard Four: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Four Exit Requirement Projects

Students must complete four class projects before exiting the class

Project One: Students must present a mini lesson to the class on a sport or activity they are an expert at. They will do research on a sport or activity and give a brief history of the sport, i.e. what country it comes from, how it started. They will state the main rules and how it is played. This is an oral presentation and they must teach the class the activity or skill. Students must explain and demonstrate the skill or activity, listing the critical elements of the skill. After the skill is taught, the class will practice the skill and the student instructing us will peer coach the other students in the skill.

Project Two: Students will create a fitness plan for their personal lifestyle. They will plan how they will stay fit during their life by stating what activities they will participate in during the week. This will include a plan for the frequency, intensity and duration of the activity with accommodations for progression.

Project Three: Students will complete fitness testing on our computerized
Tri – Fit system. The Tri-Fit system is a computerized bike. It is used as a diagnostic tool to measure fitness levels. It can test flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Students will print out results in a graph form. They will then analyze the results and set fitness goals. Students will then formulate a plan for improvement.

Project Four: Students will create a brochure on a health or fitness topic, researching the benefits and other information about the topic.
Students will complete reflections on these projects for their portfolios. The students read and respond to current event topics in health and fitness. They decipher difficult texts using their bookmark strategies. Together we create a class vocabulary list of new words we encounter in our reading.
