InnPositive Behavior Initiatives

Program Descriptions

What is a Positive Behavior Initiative?

Positive Behavior Initiative is an observation and data-driven approach to identifying and eliminating challenging behaviors in students by clarifying
social norms and using positive reinforcement. It is the expectation that this strategy greatly reduces school suspensions and classroom disruptions.

Introduced to Fairfax County Public Schools by University of Oregon’s Dr. George Sugai, Positive Behavior Initiatives or Supports did not include alternative schools as institutions that could benefit from this approach. However, Mountain View seeks to maintain and steadily increase its school climate and individualize plans-of-action that get students into a momentum toward graduation.

Core Elements

These Positive Behavior Initiatives focus on school-wide, small group and intense individual interventions.

School Climate

Mountain View’s school climate is shared by the principal on the first day students arrive for
orientation. The motto family, love, respect is
written on walls, school spirit shirts, and delivered to students repeatedly by the administrative team.

Family, Love, Respect

Family- students enrolled become part of a new family called Mountain View School.
Love- everyone in the family shows each other and particularly extends the love to new students to help them “buy in” to the magic of Mountain View.
Respect- the Mountain View family respects each other by viewing each person with a sense of worth and one desirable of specific rights as a member of the family.
