The Mountain View Electronic Portfolio Project was initiated in the 2000-2001 school year as a learning tool for students. The portfolio represents a collection of work that students have chosen and which they feel says something about them as learners. It is not a collection of “best” work or “A” work, but rather a collection reflecting what a student has learned about him/herself, about his/her learning process, and about his/her past and future as a learner.
Mountain View Faculty understands that deep, permanent learning requires a sense of ownership, an ability to assess and change, and a pride in work produced. Focused, in-depth reflection is key to the development of those skills. Based on that understanding, the Mountain View staff introduces students to ' the process of reflection' and assists students as they create a learning portfolio.
Each Mountain View student maintains a portfolio of his or her work which is stored electronically. Students regularly reflect on their work and collect works of their choice. Toward the end of each semester, the entire Mountain View community—teachers, students, guidance counselors and administrators—participates in “Portfolio Reflection Day.” On this day students review the contents of their portfolios and write final reflections on themselves as learners. Teachers, counselors, and administrators function as coaches while the students work on their portfolios.
Graduating seniors prepare their portfolios for the Professional Review Day. On this day members of the business community review student portfolios and offer guidance to seniors. Completed portfolios are transferred to CD and given to students at graduation.
