Reading &Writing to Learn
Resource Department | Electronic Portfolio | Web Quests

All teachers in all disciplines teach students to use reading and writing strategies appropriate to their respective disciplines. At every Orientation each student receives a “Reading Strategies” bookmark which lists actions readers and writers can take to better comprehend and understand difficult material. “Lightbulbs,” published approximately once a month, feature particular strategies, the work of a particular teacher, or relevant excerpts from the professional literature. “Read and Reap,” a blackboard.com course for the Mountain View community, is in the process of being created. Students and faculty will be able to access past issues of “Lightbulbs,” participate in a discussion board about books being read, write reviews of books and use links to other useful reading and writing websites. Both student and teacher readers write brief reviews of favorite books on “Howling Timberwolf” forms, which are then posted in the hallways for all to read. The Reading/Writing Resource Teacher coordinates these publications and activities as well as works with teachers in all disciplines to incorporate reading and writing to learn strategies in instruction. |
