At Mountain View Alternative High School, we offer ESOL classes at three proficiency levels. At Mountain View, we test student proficiency levels in reading, writing, and speaking three times per school year.
A level classes are for beginning ESOL students. These students have little or limited proficiency in English and need intensive English instruction. They receive two ESOL classes daily and may be enrolled in Concept Science and/or Concept Social Studies, as well as an appropriate math class.
B1 level students are at an intermediate level and have some proficiency in understanding and speaking English. These students need additional experience in reading and writing English. They have two ESOL classes daily and may be enrolled in Biology, World History I, a math class, and elective courses.
B2 level classes are for advanced ESOL students who are fairly proficient in speaking and understanding English. They are in the process of refining their English reading and writing skills. In addition to one daily B2 ESOL class, these students are enrolled in a daily English 9 Transitional course. These students may be enrolled in most general education courses, but are not eligible for English 10, 11, 12, or US/VA History.
To be exited from the Fairfax County ESOL program, all students must:
1- complete their required ESOL courses satisfactorily and,
2– score at exit-level proficiency in reading and writing.
Once exited, students are designated at the B3 level for two years. At this level, students are developing competence in cognitive academic language proficiency. These students are eligible to enroll in all FCPS courses. B3 students are monitored by the local LEP (Limited English Proficiency committee and can be recommended for additional instructional support as needed. They are required to take Virginia SOL (Standards of Learning) tests, but are entitled to LEP accommodations.
