FCPS Online Databases

EBSCO includes a great “Kid’s Search” search engine, an animal encyclopedia,  and does full text searching of magazines articles, newspapers, and reference books. Ebsco also includes the ERIC database, a professional collection, and a literature resource called Novelist, which provides reviews and book discussion guides.   You can also search for primary sources in Kid’s Search and images in Searchasaurus.

SIRS also provides a Lexile Rating for reading level. This is a good place for upper grades to research current events. It provides carefully selected articles from over 12,000 sources including World Almanac for Kids. Go to the database features tab and you will see an inviting list of informational topics ranging from Today's News, to World Maps, to the branches of the US government.

ABC-CLIO is primarily for the upper grades and contains a wealth of information on social studies topics. Its state profile feature has biographies and images of Douglas Wilder, Nat Turner, and current important Virginians. There are also maps, the state constitution, the state song, and information about the state government and its representatives. The World Geography section has current country profiles. There is an entire section on United States wars, including images and maps. Ancient History, American History, and Government can also be found here.

GROLIER has 7 encyclopedias including a Spanish encyclopedia, a geography resource, a science encyclopedia, and America the Beautiful--a great tool for Virginia history. All of these products are filled with captioned images and maps. Grolier also has an atlas, a thesaurus, and five dictionaries including a Spanish-English dictionary. The Grolier page has "This Day in History...," lesson plans, and games.

WORLD BOOK  is an electronic version of the same trusted encyclopedia educators have loved for years. It is filled with captioned images, maps, and student activities. In addition, this electronic version has been tailored to fit our needs with its Explore Virginia section and a link that shows how articles align with SOL standards. World Book Kids is a junior version with an easier reading level.

GALE GROUP has over a dozen databases for every age group! Info Bits is for K-5 students and has an appealing  interface. With the Biography Resource, you can  research everyone from Madonna to Donald Rumsfeld. The Science Resource Center is great for upper grades. For those of you in graduate school, Gale has a professional collection and reference e-books. Full citations are included for bibliographies.

eLibrary includes newspaper and magazine articles, TV transcripts, maps, images and much more.

Connections is a database of over two thousand works of children’s literature and their connections to the Virginia Standards of Learning.  Connections also includes links to primary sources in the Library of Congress American Memory Collection.
