(MWES students present their tsunami drill solution to Assistant Superintendent for Cluster 8, Dr. Fabio Zuluaga and Principal of Mosby Woods, Dr. Mahri Aste.)
Students from Mosby Woods Elementary School participated in the First Lego League (FLL) competition. FLL is an organization that is dedicated to educating kids about science and technology. Kids are presented with a real-life problem and are required to come up with an innovative solution. This year's problem was Nature's Fury. Students had to choose a natural disaster, research the problem, and create an innovative solution. The Storm Callers chose tsunami as their natural disaster. They researched most of the existing solutions and decided that most people are not fully aware and prepared for a tsunami. They saw some existing tsunami drills but they were not mandatory all over the world. The Storm Callers idea was to make this drill mandatory for every school, everywhere to educate students.
The Storm Callers presented the solution at the regional competition held at George Mason University on November 17, 2013. Their solution was well received and they were judged as 2nd place in the overall competition.
They were interviewed by News Channel 8 and were telecasted in the 10pm news on November 25th 2013. Here is the link: http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/11/fairfax-county-team-aims-to-save-lives-in-lego-competition-97365.html
Congratulations Storm Callers!
