Technology at McNair |
![]() |
All students at McNair have access to the multiple forms of technology provided by FCPS. Classrooms and resources rooms have SmartBoards, desktop and laptop computers, and up-to-date software. Teachers and resource staff all are trained to use these tools and create many new teaching tools each year. The 30-station computer lab is open to all classes. Students also have access to the four mobile laptop carts, making technology use a part of daily learning. McNair has a rich before and after-school and lunch technology program. Fifth and sixth grade students participate in Lab Lunch, a free-choice program where they are exposed to high-level programming and CAD software. Students create video games, build Web sites, design homes and buildings, and build roller coasters as part of this program. Fourth and fifth graders work on the Tech Team, learning about computer maintenance and basic repair while helping to keep the school's computers up and running. After-school programs are comprised of the two grant-funded Robotics programs--Beginning and Advanced Robotics for fifth and sixth graders using the two level of Lego Mindstorms kits, and Pico Cricket for third and fourth graders. GEMS, Girls Excelling in Math and Science, is offered for fifth and sixth grade girls to support and encourage continued interest in math and science. New programs this year include video production, a GIS club and Rubik's cube solving. For more information, contact Laura Reasoner Jones, SBTS, 703-793-4741 |
