Quotes
You don’t have to be an A student to have a
better-than-Ivy-college experience that will make you a smarter, better, and
more confident and effective person. The little known truth is that these
colleges have been on the cutting edge for decades. They have out performed
most of the Ivies and their clones in the percentages of graduates who become
America’s scientists and scholars. Their
power lies in how they do it. The focus
is on the student not the faculty.
Learning is collaborative rather than competitive. Aspirations are raised;
young people are empowered.

WOMEN’S COLLEGES
Week of 10/30
Most women’s college students
select their schools for the same reasons as other college students: academic
program, location, reputation, success of graduates. The fact that they are
women’s colleges seems, at the time, incidental. Yet over time, students
invariably begin to feel that their college is special because it is a women’s college. As one student
remarked at the end of her freshman year, “I almost didn’t go to my school
because it was all women. Now, I wouldn’t trade it for anything!”
Women’s colleges are very good
for young women who want to get leadership training. Their focus on career
related development leads to an impressive record for women’s college graduates
in graduate school and in the job market. A study of recent women’s college
graduates revealed that about half of those surveyed earned an advanced degree,
and one in six received a doctorate, a medical or law degree, or an MBA. Nearly
half of these women are in such traditionally male-dominated fields as law,
finance, management and computers. Also, their salaries are well above the
national average for all women graduates.
Women’s colleges also put you in
touch with “women who have made it” in a variety of careers and who thus can
offer you advice on your own career plans.
Going to a women’s college does not mean, however, that you are cut off
from men for your college years. Most women’s colleges are located near one or
more coeducational colleges, and nine out of ten have cross-registration
programs with them.
