Mission Statement: The McLean High School College/Career Center is a vibrant resource for students, faculty and staff, parents and the community. The Center provides information associated with post secondary planning: two and four year colleges, vocational and technical schools, apprenticeship programs, civilian and military careers, scholarships and financial aid, job and summer opportunities. All students, regardless of their background, academic achievement, or economic situation, are given the opportunity to develop plans for the future that take into account their interests and abilities, current trends in education, the economy and the job market.

“Are you sure you sent my recommendation/transcript?” NOTE FOR CLASS OF 2008. Here at McLean High School, we know how nerve-wracking it can be to receive a postcard or an email that says a college is still missing your materials, or to check the status of your application online and see that documents are missing. Rest assured, we really did send everything by the deadline!

It might help to know that colleges face a MOUNTAIN of admissions mail every day—mail that requires very systematic and careful handling. As a result, there will be a very reasonable delay between the moment your application arrives at the admissions office and the time it is processed and placed into your file.

In other words: if you get notification from a college saying that a piece of your application is missing, DON’T PANIC. In all likelihood, it is at the office and simply hasn’t been entered into the system yet. Check with your counselor or teacher about the date on which the material was sent, and give the college a few days to sort the mail before you call. Usually, time takes care of the problem beautifully—but if it doesn’t, please let the staff in the guidance department know how we can help.

The Scholarship Database-Members of the Class of 2008 should sign up for online scholarship notification at www.fastweb.com.

WANT TO VISIT A COLLEGE DURING SCHOOL HOURS? Fairfax County recognizes the importance of college visits in order for students to make the best possible decisions for future study. Come to the Attendance Office for a college visit pass. The student must have college admissions counselor sign the pass and attach an official school stamp in order for the visit to not be counted within the fifteen (15) day absence policy. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Jeffers in the Main Office.

When can we come to the College/Career Center? All students are encouraged to visit the Center during break, lunch and after school. All grade levels are scheduled into the College Career Center for college and career units. Parents are also welcome during the school day, but are encouraged to contact Mrs. Rahn in advance to be sure there are no classes scheduled into the Center using the resources. Appointments are available for students and parents/guardians after school from 2:20 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Parent and student programs are held throughout the year, both during the school day and in the evening.

Where can we find information? Information is advertised through the MHS Pipenotes, online through Keep In Touch , Blackboard, and this web site, as well as in guidance and the College Career Center.
