ACADEMICS AND SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
Spring Update
Congratulations Lindsey Benedict (Journalism Teacher) and the Highlander Newsmagazine staff. The Highlander newsmagazine won Best in Show (1st place) at the state journalism conference/competition in Harrisonburg this weekend! Student David Nguyen won 2nd place in the news writing competition and 3rd place in the advertising competition.
Congratulations Jean Wright and the Robotics Team. The Mclean High School Programming team attended their final competition at the University of Maryland High School Programming Contest on Saturday, April 21st. The students spent 3 hours working on very difficult programming problems.
Thirteen students attended the Botball Robotics Tournament Saturday, April 21st at Woodson High School. Students worked tirelessly for 6 weeks creating the game board, creating 2 robots, programming the robots, and providing documentation for the robots. The team won two head to head competitions and scored more total points than last year and had nearly perfect documentation.

McLean Festival Orchestra who performed this weekend at a national festival and received great accolades! In addition to receiving a gold rating (for the highest marks possible) they received the “Outstanding Orchestra” Trophy for overall best orchestra at the festival.
The McLean Festival was a combination of students in the Symphonic and Concert Orchestras.
Congratulations to the McLean Choral Students who competed in a National Choir Festival this weekend and took First Place in all five categories!
Outstanding section awards were given to the Altos in the Madrigal Choir, the Soprano section in the Advanced Armonia Choir, the Alto section in Womens Choir and the Basses in Mens Choir.
Outstanding Soloist awards were given to Victor Zheng for the baritone solo of Faure’s Requiem; Nick Stone for his Tenor solos in Dulaman, a traditional Gaelic song.
Womens Choir scored the highest of any competitor at the festival, coming away with a 99%.The Choral Department was also awarded the Grand Championship trophy for the festival, having scored higher than any other competing school.
Congratulations to all of the members of the McLean Bands for OUTSTANDING performances in the Worldstrides Heritage Festival in Boston this weekend!

Instrumental Division Grand Champions
Boys Tennis has started off with an impressive 6-0 start with marquee wins over Thomas Jefferson and Langley. They are currently in 1st place in the Liberty District.
Girls Tennis has started off with an impressive 4 and 2 record including wins over Fairfax, Stone Bridge, South Lakes and Madison and are currently in 3rd place in the Liberty District.
Baseball is off to a 7-4 start with marquee wins over Lake Braddock and West Springfield during the spring break tournament at McLean High School.
Softball is off to an 8-2 start and went 3-0 at the spring break tournament at Robinson High school.
Girls Soccer is off to a 5-3 start!
Boys Soccer is off to 5-2-2 start!
Boys Lacrosse has gotten off to a very competitive start with big wins over Yorktown, Annandale and Falls Church, they are in the heart of Liberty District play.
Girls Lacrosse has been competitive with wins over Washington Lee and Falls Church and are in the heart of Liberty District play.
Track and Field has had several strong performances so far with meets against Stone Bridge, Thomas Jefferson, Madison and Marshall. They also competed in the Carolyn Legends meet at Woodson High School in March.
Crew-On April 14th, our crew team had 13 entries, McLean, with a 5th (for a lightweight boat racing as an open) and 3 each of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishes, completes their first regatta of the season with a very strong showing. First Regatta of the season!
