Bringing and Picking Up Students Before and After School

We encourage all children who live in the walking area to walk to school. Please provide your child with appropriate clothing for all weather conditions and let him/her become more independent and healthy by walking. It is good exercise and makes it easier for your child to settle into the learning environment. Patrols are stationed at major crosswalks to ensure your child's safety. We do not, however, recommend children to use the sidewalk along Nutley Street because of the traffic. All children enter the building by the front door.

If you drive your child to school, please enter the south parking lot by way of Dellwood Drive and join the "Kiss and Ride" line. Your child will exit the car at the shelter and be escorted to the front entrance by a patrol. Heavy traffic and inclement weather can create a safety hazard for children on foot and for drivers, so please be observant at all times, and follow the instructions of the patrols. For security reasons the back entrances to the school will remain locked. The back Parking lot is NOT to be use to drop off or pick up students during arrival or dismissal times. All student and adults must enter through the main door. This allows the best supervision of those entering the building.

If you pick up your child up after school, please meet your child at the "Kiss and Ride" shelter. The driveway in front of the school is reserved for buses.

Please respect the reserved Handicap Accessible parking spaces. Do not park in them if your car does not have a valid handicap parking permit, even for a quick drop off or pick up.

PTA OFFICERS

The PTA supports the school through many committees. The programs of the school reflect the generous assistance of the school community. Each parent can find some phase of the work interesting, whether he/she can contribute time to one activity or on a regular basis. Get involved! The PTA will distribute information about membership and activities. The president is responsive to the concern of parents, and will maintain open lines of communication with the school.

President:  Shelley Koshuta
Vice President: Bets Thomas and Beth Eachus
Secretary: Laura Schultz
Treasurer:
Susan Vouvalis

The PTA is a very helpful adjunct to the school. It does not make or enforce policies or procedures, but encourages and promotes a pleasant home/school relationship. Getting involved with the PTA is one way parents can help make Marshall Road a better school. The PTA provides many services and programs that benefit the students and teachers. It provides the funds for the cultural arts programs for the school, volunteer programs, room mother network, Fun Fair, Book Fairs, and the Ice Cream Social. In the past, the PTA has raised the money to provide: air conditioning in all classrooms, cork stripping in the hallways, a new laminator machine, new computers, carts, computer software, choral risers, a camcorder, and many extras. The PTA purchased and helped install new playground equipment. The children have enjoyed these special treats immensely. The PTA helped obtain a sidewalk along the south side of Marshall Road to the Ware Street intersection. This has increased the safety of our students who walk home on that route.

Volunteer help from parents is a vital component for the successful operation of Marshall Road. There are many areas where you can share your time and talent with the school. The possibilities include PTA committee work, classroom instructional and clerical support, library, and special programs like "Art Smart". There are even volunteer projects or activities that can be handled at home or in evenings for those parents who cannot be in the school in the daytime.

RELEASE OF STUDENTS

Specific procedures are followed to assure the safety of children who are released during the day.

1.   Written parental permission should be sent to the teacher stating the time of release. If any person other than the parent or guardian is to pick up the child, the school must have a statement from the parent specifying the necessary information.

2.  The parent (or other adult named in the note) should COME TO THE OFFICE AND SIGN FOR THE CHILD. Children will remain with the teacher until notified by the office.

3.   Children may not leave the building during the day unaccompanied by an adult.

4.   Parents are requested to designate on the Emergency Care Information page another person who is authorized to pick a student up from school early, or who should be called if a child is ill and the parent/guardian cannot be reached.

Reminder: Please notify the school when work, home, or cell phone numbers are changed.

ATTENDANCE / TARDINESS

Regular, on-time attendance is critical to your child’s success. Absences impair the continuity of your child’s learning.  Some classroom assignments can be made up; however the day-to-day interaction with teacher and classmates, and hands-on opportunities cannot be replaced. Occasional tardy arrivals are unavoidable, such as medical or dental appointments. Habitual tardiness denies your child the important “settling in” time before the academic day begins at 9:05 am.

Your child is required to attend school each day unless there is a legitimate reason for absence, such as illness, medical or dental appointments, observance of a religious holiday, or a death in the family. Missing the school bus, taking a vacation, or babysitting younger siblings are not valid excuses for missing school. Teachers are not required to provide make-up work for a student who is absent for those reasons.

If your student is going to be absent, a parent/guardian must call the school office at 703-937-1500 and report the absence. You may leave a message after 4:30 p.m. or before 8 a.m., or speak directly to someone in the office after 8 a.m. Every absence must be verified the morning of every school day. If the school does not receive a call, the office will call the student’s home. If a parent cannot be reached, the absence is recorded as “unexcused” and will require a note from the parent upon the student’s return.

Your child is considered tardy if he or she arrives after 9:05 a.m., unless he or she is on a school bus that has arrived late. All students who arrive after the 9:05 a.m. bell MUST report to the school office to be checked in before going to class.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL: PARENTS, CHILDREN, AND ANIMALS

For security and safety reasons, all visitors must report to the office and sign in. Volunteers will need to pick up a volunteer badge and indicate where they will be working. All other visitors must have made prior arrangements to observe a classroom, tour the building, visit the cafeteria or to meet with school personnel. We will not interrupt the classroom for impromptu visits or conferences. Younger children, siblings of students, or students from other schools will not be permitted in the classroom. When animals are related to a specific part of a program, and are approved by the principal, they may be brought to the school by the parent and taken home by the parent at the end of the lesson that day. Any animals should have had rabies shots and be gentle in nature.

Please do not leave the main office or foyer for another part of the building without signing in and indicating your purpose. Persons who do not comply will be considered intruders.

EMERGENCY CARE CARDS

The primary purpose of the Emergency Care Information page is to provide contact information to locate parents in the event of an illness or emergency involving a child. WE MUST be able to reach you or another emergency contact at any time. Please list all phone numbers where you may be reached INCLUDING OFFICE TELEPHONES AND CELL PHONES. If you are going to be away or at another number for an extended period of time, please call the office and provide your temporary contact information. If you appoint a neighbor or friend as an emergency contact for your child, be sure to provide the school with those numbers as well. It is a good idea to have more than one emergency contact, if possible. Please list on the Emergency Care Information page any existing medical conditions your child has.

If a childcare facility or babysitter regularly picks up your child, he or she must be listed on the Emergency Care Information page.

ANY CHANGES IN YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION AND EMERGENCY CARE PROVIDER INFORMATION SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Fairfax County Public Schools offers optional medical accident and dental accident insurance plans for students. Information regarding these will be sent home in this welcoming packet. If not, please request the brochures from the office. Any specific questions regarding the insurance program should be directed to the companies. If you desire the insurance, all paperwork and fees are to be sent directly to the provider.

MEDICATION

The school is not permitted to administer medication to your child without your written statement of informed consent on the MEDICATION AUTHORIZATION form; prescription medications also require a physician’s signature. Exceptional health problems must be brought to the attention of the principal. You will be provided the appropriate forms for medications, inhalers, and epi-pens to be completed, signed and returned. Prescriptions must be in the original packaging. Children are not permitted to carry medications either to or from school, or with them during the day.

The clinic aide is not a registered nurse and does not have extensive medical training; she cannot prescribe or diagnose. She will dispense medications and provide first aid in the form of washing, icing, elevating injured limbs, and bandaging. She cannot perform any procedures such as removing splinters, etc.

PERMISSION TO GO HOME WITH ANOTHER STUDENT

Your child will not be permitted to call home during the school day to obtain permission to go home with another child. All after-school arrangements must be made in advance and a note from PARENTS OF BOTH FAMILIES must be brought to the school office at the beginning of the school day. Written permission is required for a student to remain at school for any reason except scouting or other non school activities.

STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Each new school year provides the opportunity to continue strengthening our academic program in a safe learning environment that is conducive to student achievement and success. School personnel, students, and parents have a shared responsibility for student learning and safety.

The Virginia General Assembly addressed the collaborative responsibilities for maintaining safe and orderly schools in the Virginia Omnibus Educational Act of 1995. One requirement of the act is that parents must be provided with the standards of student conduct. Another is the requirement for parents to sign and return an acknowledgement of receipt of the student rules. The Code of Virginia and the Acknowledgment of Parental Responsibility are found in the Student Responsibilities and Rights handbook, which includes the Rules of Conduct and is distributed to each student at the beginning of each school year or enrollment during the year.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

Marshall Road Elementary emphasizes the Standards of Quality legislated for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the objectives/priorities determined by the Board of Fairfax County Public Schools.
The Fairfax County Public Schools curriculum is published in the Program of Studies. The POS includes learning objectives in grades K-3 and 4-6 for all subjects in the elementary curriculum. Copies of the Program of Studies are available on the Fairfax County Public Schools web site: www.fcps.edu.

We believe that excellent schools depend on (1) strong leadership, (2) high expectations, (3) a safe atmosphere, and (4) careful monitoring of individual students and their programs.

At Marshall Road, there is a strong emphasis on character education and achievement. Through reinforcement of positive student behavior, targeted instruction, and school/community collaboration, we strive to meet these goals.

Teachers are organized into grade level teams for curriculum planning and, in some cases, joint instruction of the students assigned. Both large and small group instruction are used throughout the school. Flexible grouping and differentiation are used to accommodate differing abilities and rates of learning.

HOMEWORK

Basic homework expectations for your child will be explained by the classroom teacher at the Back-to-School Night program. In general, homework is considered to be a time for skill practice, enrichment, or more in-depth attention to a given unit of study or subject area. Hard-fast rules concerning homework cannot be made since individual teachers may vary slightly in assignments. However, efforts are directed by teachers to establish uniformity for each grade level as much as possible. Responsibility for homework should gradually increase from grades one through six.

Return to Top l Return to Home

TEXTBOOKS

All textbooks and workbooks are issued without charge to students for their use during the school year. Students who lose or damage textbooks and/or library books will be charged a lost or damaged fee. Reading books and workbooks are not to be brought home.

Return to Top l Return to Home

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are issued four times a year at nine-week intervals. Parents should expect progress reports approximately ten days after the end of each nine-week grading period. Parent conferences will be held at the end of the first nine weeks, and the first report card will be given to parents at that time. All subsequent progress reports will be sent home with the students.

Return to Top l Return to Home

INTERIM REPORTS

Interim reports are used by teachers to report student progress at the mid-point of a grading period. Please note that all students will receive an interim report. These reports are often used to offer information about student work habits. A parent’s signature is required on all interim reports.

CLASSROOM PARTIES

Classroom birthday parties are not permitted. If you would like to bring cupcakes, cookies, or some other special treat on or near your child’s birthday, please let your child’s teacher know. Please send individual servings, do not send a whole cake. The teacher will decide if the treat will be eaten at lunch time or another convenient time, depending on the day’s study schedule. Invitations to parties outside of school may not be distributed in the classroom unless the entire class is invited.

STUDENT DRESS

The Fairfax County School Board has an existing policy statement (2613 Policies, Bylaws and Regulations) governing student appearance and dress which reads as follows: “Dress and Grooming: Student dress and grooming are the right and responsibility of students and their parents, unless some standard of dress and grooming is a requirement of a course or activity, or necessary for reasons of health and safety. Forms of dress and grooming which are disruptive to learning and to the students’ program are prohibited.” Students may not wear shirts, hats, or other articles that advocate or advertise alcohol or other drugs.

Since Marshall Road does not have dressing facilities for students taking physical education, students are to observe the following:

All students shall wear tennis shoes and socks for physical education daily.
This should not be interpreted to mean that tennis shoes must be worn all day.
Storage space for tennis shoes will be provided for any student wishing to change shoes for physical education. Girls who wear dresses are to wear shorts under dresses for tumbling and PE Testing.

If you have any questions about the Student Dress Code Policy, please contact Clarence Jones, coordinator, Safe and Drug Free Youth Section, at 703-876-5265.

LUNCH PROGRAM

Our cafeteria operates under the National School Lunch Program.  The daily lunch is balanced to meet one-third of the daily food requirements for your child. You will receive a menu each month featuring daily lunch choices. Prices for lunches, milk, and a la carte items are sent home on the first day of school. No charges for lunch are permitted.  However, Food Services provides a debit account for all students who wish to participate. You may send in enough money to cover several days, weeks, or a month’s worth of lunches, and the cafeteria will add that amount to your child’s account. After going through the lunch line, students will key their individual lunch account number into a touch pad and their account is debited for the day’s lunch. When only three days worth of lunches remain, a reminder will be given to your child.

Three Ways to Purchase Meals:

Online Payment-Using www.myLunchMoney.com. A small fee applies each time the customer charges funds to their credit/debit card through the MyLunchMoney.com website. The service is easy-to-use, convenient, private, and secure. Once an account is established, parents can check the fund account anytime from the home computer or phone. The child(ren)'s information stays at school.

Check-Write a check to Marshall Road Food Services, and bring the check to the office. Parents who want their check payments for meals only should write it on their check or tell the food service manager. A detailed printout of student purchases is available upon request.

Cash-For daily purchases or deposit on your accounts.

USE OF TELEPHONE BY STUDENTS

Children will not make telephone calls during the school day. In the case of illness, the clinic aide/office will make the call home. Please help your child develop a routine of placing things that must be brought to school in a designated place in order that money, books, jackets, permission slips, notes to the office, musical instruments and homework will not be left at home. We would like our classrooms to be free from interruptions.

Return to Top l Return to Home

MONEY

When your child brings money to school, please enclose it in an envelope labeled with his/her teacher’s name, and the purpose. Children should not bring extra money to school.

Return to Top l Return to Home

TOYS AND OTHER PERSONAL BELONGINGS AT SCHOOL

Under no circumstances is your child permitted to bring toy guns, knives, water pistols, matches, or other dangerous or dangerous looking items to school.

Toy cars, cards, dolls, computer games and toys in general lead to a disruption of valuable instructional time. These should be left at home unless the teacher has approved them for “show and tell.”
Valuable articles, cameras, computerized equipment, jewelry, watches and radios are not to be brought to school. The school cannot assume responsibility for these items if they are lost, stolen or broken.

It is recommended that students not bring cell phones to school. If they do, it is recommended that they be dropped off in the office for the duration of the school day. If a student must keep a cell phone with him or her, it must be turned off and left in a backpack during the day, and may be used only with authorization from the principal. If the cell phone is used without permission, it will be subject to confiscation by school officials and returned only to the student’s parent or guardian.

Return to Top l Return to Home

LOST AND FOUND

Every summer the school donates a large number of personal belongings – some quite expensive and in good condition – to charity because they could not be returned to the owner. Please label your child’s jackets, lunch boxes, backpacks and other items brought to school. Many of these items are left on the playground or in the cafeteria or bathroom. We maintain a lost and found, and you are encouraged to inspect it for missing property.
