2010-2011

For the competition, students submitted a 200-word executive summary about a business they would like start. On Saturday, students gave a three-minute memorized elevator pitch to four entrepreneur judges at Duques Hall at George Washington University. Finalists gave their pitch an additional time in the actual building elevator. The judges, who rotated among the high school, undergraduate and graduate divisions, were effusive in the praise of the, students stating that the high school students were better prepared, researched, and professional than their collegiate competitors. Said Justin Velez-Hagan, National Executive Director of the National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce, "They absolutely blew the graduate students out of the water with their preparation, thorough understanding of the start up process, passion, practical understanding of the business implications, actual experience in their respective fields, thorough research of their particular product ideas . . I could go on."

  • Marshall's music program -- band, choir, and orchestra -- again achieved "Blue Ribbon Status" this year. Blue Ribbon Status is bestowed on middle and high schools whose top band, choir, and orchestra earn Superior ratings at their respective annual festivals.
  • The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble earned the highest rating of "Superior" at the VBODA District XII Assessment Festival.
  • Caroline Goh was named a National Scholastic Art Award Winner for her work in digital art. Caroline is on 26 FCPS national award winners.
  • FBLA was recognized as a Regional Honor Chapter.   • Marshall DECA was named a Preferred chapter for the state of Virginia at the Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference.   • Jocelyn Golden and Cindy Pham have been selected to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference. HOBY ambassadors are "outstanding high school students selected as representatives from their high schools because they have demonstrated the potential to lead others."
  • The following writers have been recognized in the 2011 DC Regional Scholastic Writing Awards. A panel of Washington writers, teachers, and literary professionals selected these works, from among many outstanding submissions, as the most exceptional in the region: Nour Abdel-Ghani received a Silver Key for her personal essay "The Abruptness of Reality," Monika Bapna received a Silver Key for her personal essay ""Finding My Reflection in an Opaque Mirror," and Lauren Bellegarde received an honorabele mention for her poem "The Snow from the Day I Was Born, Chimera - Me and You."
  • These art students had their award-winning work on display at the Regional Scholastic Art Show at the Northern VA Community College Annandale campus, Ernst Cultural Center. Gold Key winners' work will compete nationally: Keith Boylan (Silver Key for sculpture), Ria Firth (Gold Key for three paintings), Caroline Goh (Gold Key for digital art), Yoon Lee (Silver Key for painting), Akriti Virdi (Silver Key for digital art), and Frances Yee (Gold Key for digital art). Additional recognition goes to Laura King (Certificate of Merit for digital art), Carson Monroe (Certificate of Merit for digital art), and Sharon Wolbarsht (Certificate of Merit for mixed media).
  • Larry Blakely, Marshall's football and basketball announcer, was selected as the 2010-2011 recipient of the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association VIAAA Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented to those outside the field of athletic administration who provide outstanding service to high school athletics.
  • The following musicians were selected for District Band: Lizzie Culbertson, Nick Kemp, Jessica Rennert, Nick Ritter, Kanika Sahai, Malavika Sahai, Mike Wang, and Will Webb.
  • Eian Burgess is the Bass 2 1st Alternate in the All-State Choir, and Devon Kalbaugh is Alto 1.
  • FBLA Statesmen placed 1st and 2nd in round 1 of the Lifesmarts state academic competition: Team 1, which placed first, consisted of Michael Benson, Daniel Heshmatipour, Benjamin Kim, and Gabriel Ritter; Team 2, which placed second, consisted of Nathaniel Chen, Shannen Escobar, Corey Martin, Sandy Vo.

  • The Model United Nations team took Secretary-General's Award for Outstanding Delegation for a large school (1st place overall) at the IB-MA MUN Conference. Individual recognitions include Best Delegate (1st place) awards to Mazin Ali, Mohammed Alsati, and Ash Deval & Amir Noorbaksh; Outstanding Delegate (2n place) awards to Mike Breger & Philip Grudier; Robinson Cho; Ashton Garriott; Sanket Mainali & Gowri Shivasabesan; and Honorable Mentions to Ali Amirghassemi and Bruce Ferguson & Johnathan Helm.
  • Kathryn Peyton was named Virginia's 2010 Outstanding Economics Educator of the Year.

  • Congratulate Jenny Felter, Christine Greve, and Ritika Jain for winning the inaugural Transurban Orange Cones No Phones High School Challenge. They gave a 20-minute presentation on how to promote the Orange Cones No Phones brand to FCPS high school students using a $5,000 budget. Their ideas were creative and the judges commented on how well-researched their plan was as presented. These students have won an internship with Transurban to implement their proposal.

Overall, the 21-student women's cross country team had the highest GPA (4.0); the school's 270 athletes averaged a 3.49 GPA during the season.

  • The following orchestra members have been accepted into the All-District Orchestra: Julia Eltzroth, Celia Islam, Devon Kalbaugh, Sam Kwong, Alicia Moon, and Lara Periard.
  • The Marshall Theatre Tech team won first in the tech Olympics at the Virginia Theatre Association State Conference. The team of Maddy Fleshman, Johnny Hargrove, Amber Holder, Robbie Teague, and Nate Wunderlich (alternates Yara Alemi and Garrett Wood) competed in eight events for the win. Madeleine Fleshman also won second place in the set design competition from a large field of great designs. The team also presented a one-act that was well-received. Several seniors participated in college auditions and most received numerous call-backs and offers from several universities.

  • Orla Conway was awarded the NCA Cappies award for best Featured Actress.
  • Annie Luther, Shannon Sturgeon, and Zachary Stahl received an award at the Gettysburg Yearbook Experience for "Excellence in Yearbook Theme Development." The award is given to a select number of schools whose yearbook theme proposals stand out to the appraisers.
