Clubs, Groups, and Publications

Academic Clubs

It's Academic Melissa Nicholson It's Academic gives students a chance to test their knowledge in a competitive but fun atmosphere. Players try to answer questions on almost anything, from academic subjects to pop culture.
Varsity Math Team Judy Greenblum Math Club helps to foster a love for mathematics and problem solving. This prepares students for the many competitions through the year and teaches new problem solving techniques and helps students gain mathematical insight. Monthly math competitions are held within the county and the state.
Junior Math Team Cheryl Fischer The Junior Math Team is a group of students who enjoy mathematics and problem solving. Students participate in six county-wide competitions per year, held during Learn. Students in Algebra I through Algebra 2 Honors are eligible and can come to any of the announced competition dates.
Model United Nations Tom Brannan
and Kathryn Peyton		 Model UN is a student run organization that simulates that United Nations by debate, student leadership, and resolution of problems. Members compete at conferences both locally and nationally. Also, students compete both individually and as a team by representing a chosen country. The Club meets monthly and operates a website on Blackboard for its members, providing them with information on up-coming conferences, fund raisers, guidance on policy papers, etc.  Blackboard’s MUN site also uses the Discussion Board feature to let students sign up in advance for conference assignments.  Students who sign up for weekend conferences must be in good academic standing.   MUN training is provided once a year at the early October My First MUN Training Conference. 

Co-Curricular Clubs

DECA Pat Edwards, Jennifer Hendrickson and Stephen Moody DECA is a national association of marketing education students, provides teachers and members with educational and leadership development activities to merge with the education classroom instructional program. DECA chapters attract students who are interested in preparing for entrepreneurial, marketing or management careers. DECA utilizes on-the-job experience, chapter projects, and a program of competency-based competitive events in specific marketing occupational areas. These events emphasize academic and vocational excellence.
FBLA Rebekah Glasbrenner FBLA is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world! FBLA provides the opportunity to network and socialize with students and professionals within the state, nationally, and internationally. Competitions are held in a variety of academic conferences having over 75 different events from such as: Job interview, cyber security, Database Design & Applications, Management Decision Makin. Public Speaking, Network Design, Accounting, Business Law, and many more!!
Skills USA Carol Ferson and Ciaran Devlin SkillsUSA serves trade, industrial, and technical students by developing their skills and leadership qualities. SkillsUSA instills spirit and a desire to learn, to grow and to become a productive citizen. Students will be able to compete in state and national competitions in their chosen fields. Skills USA is a co-curricular program where students are enrolled in trade, career, industrial, technical, and health occupational classes.

Honor Societies

Chinese Honor Society Jei Lei Chinese Honor Society’s objective is to acknowledge the superior achievement of students studying Chinese as a second language. Like other honor societies, the Chinese Honor Society not only recognizes high scholastic achievement but also good character, leadership, and service. Members should exemplify all these standards.  The Society’s goal is to promote enthusiasm for Chinese language learning and culture, commitment to advanced study, and greater cross-cultural understanding.

English Honor Society Martha Noone The National English Honor Society (NEHS is the only national organization exclusively for high school students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Immediate benefits of affiliation will be national recognition, scholarship eligibility, and opportunities for national networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.
French Honor Society Adwoa Ulzen The French Honor Society works to recognize high achieving French students and assist students in all French levels.
International Thespian Honor Society Mark Krikstan The International Thespian Society is the only organization to honor secondary school students for outstanding work in theatre. The society focuses on the students; their achievements, involvement, and access to quality theatre arts instruction Thespian membership is granted for the performance of meritorious work in theatre arts which meets the Society’s general guidelines.
Latin Honor Society Brian Kane The Latin Honor Society is an honorary organization for students who have exhibited excellence in the study of the Latin language. Students in the Latin Honor Society must demonstrate dedication and enthusiasm for the language.
Math Honor Society Diana Dammer Math Honor Society is dedicated to inspiring and cultivating an interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics through meetings, activities, and programs. Members are students that have excelled in and have a passion for math.
National Honor Society Alex West The National Honor Society (NHS) is a recognition program for high school students in grades 10-12 in the United States and in several other countries. NHS honors those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Quill & Scroll Journalism International Honor Society Daniel Reinish Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists was organized April 10, 1926, at the University of Iowa by renowned pollster George H. Gallup and a group of high school advisers for the purpose of encouraging and recognizing individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. The honor society is open to junior and senior students who have performed well academically and have done superior work as a member of one of Marshall’s student publications. Interested students must be recommended by their publication’s adviser.
Science Honor Society Nimel Theodore   The organization of the Science National Honor Society is one of volunteers who are teachers, scientists, and business people. These people are dedicated to creating a new cadre of scientific young people who will help to run tomorrow's high tech world.
Social Studies Honor Society Susan Cimburek and Kathryn Peyton The Social Studies Honorary is established for high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellent academic performance in the discipline, provide service toward their school or community, and exhibit attributes of leadership and good citizenship. The Social Studies Honor Society is established for high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellent academic performance in the discipline. Bi-monthly meetings offer a variety of ways to advance understanding in the Social Studies including debates, film viewings, and guest presentations.  Membership requirements include a 3.5 GPA in Social Studies classes and an overall GPA of 3.0.  Membership is also offered to IB Diploma Candidates who write their Extended Essay in Social Studies and achieve a 6 or higher; and students who have completed at least 75% of their Civics Seal requirements by the time of their senior year.

Tri-M Music Honor Society Catherine Prosser Tri-M Music Honor Society is an international music honor society designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.

Language Clubs

French Club Adwoa Ulzen French Club aims to promote the knowledge of French culture and language. It provides a forum for social activity for those currently enrolled in French.
Latin Club Brian Kane Latin club promotes the love and appreciation of the Latin language and Ancient Roman culture.
Persian Club Melissa Nicholson The purpose of this organization is to bring the students and the Persian community of George C. Marshall High School together. We would like everyone to be involved, so that commitment and dedication to each other and the club are encouraged.
Portuguese Club Carlota Shewchuk The purpose of the Portuguese Club is to encourage the study of the Portuguese language and culture through a variety of programs and activities.
Spanish Club Myrna Acevedo, Fernando Uribarri The purpose of the Spanish Club is to promote an understanding of Spanish cultures, while providing students with an opportunity to speak Spanish explore artistic expression and experience the flavor and diversity of the multi-faceted Hispanic culture in an informal social setting.

Publications

Columbian yearbook Daniel Reinish Marshall’s student yearbook, the Columbian, has been the school’s premier historical record since our building was opened in 1962. More than just a book of faces, the yearbook tells the story of what it’s like to be a Marshall student. Student journalists fill every page with feature stories and full-color photographs covering all aspects of student life, academics, and sports. The student editors lead the publication; create its theme and vision; and oversee its content. Each May/June, the staff is able to show off their hard work in the form of a treasured annual keepsake.
Rank & File newspaper Daniel Reinish Serving a growing population of over 1700 students, parents, and other community members, the Rank & File newspaper is Marshall’s only public forum produced entirely by its students. From generating leads to conducting interviews to laying out each page, students in Marshall’s Journalism courses engage in all aspects of the production process. Students also go out into the community to sell the ads and subscriptions that make it possible to print their publication each month. Reveille Literary magazine Joyana Peters Reveille is Marshall's award-winning literary magazine. Reveille is an entirely extracurricular publication; it meets every Wednesday, alternating between after school and during the second half of Lunch & Learn. New members are always welcome! To submit to the magazine digitally, upload your writing or art to the dropbox located in Blackboard, under the Library Course, Reveille tab.

Class of 2013 Tiffany Santana & Miranda Hendershot As representation for the Class of 2013, seven elected officers, along with two sponsors and a handful of very supportive parents ensure the successful planning and execution of Homecoming Week, Prom and Commencement.  Between these exciting events, the Class of 2013 officers also hold fundraising events that include the Holiday Shopping and Community Expo, Ledo's Nights, rockin’ Class of 2013 t-shirt sales and many more.   Not only that, the Class of 2013 supports Marshall with loud and proud school spirit at sporting events!

African-American Heritage Club Tanya Shuford The African-American Heritage Club is interested in learning about and celebrating African Culture as well as community service projects.
Anime Club Wanlace Yates The intent of the Anime Club is to provide a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere to lovers of Japanese animation. Meetings will explore various facets of anime and Japanese culture.
Art Club Nicole Walter Art Club gives students the opportunity to gain experience in visual art. There are many different opportunities for student participation for those interested in art.  Art Club is a great way to use your creative talents.
Best Buddies Kelly Bresnahan & Michael Mann Best Buddies is an organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.bilities (IDD).
Breadmaster's Club Kathryn Peyton The Breadmaster’s club is a place where students can meet and share their feelings on bread. Students will have the opportunity to learn about bread, its origins, recipes, and philosophical significance in everyday life. In addition, the Breadmaster’s Club is a charitable organization dedicated to solving world hunger.
Chess Club Jim Robinson The Chess Club welcomes all students, regardless of experience, who are interested in playing chess. Students will have opportunities to learn about the game and play chess with peers. The Marshall team competes in a league with other local schools including Madison and Thomas Jefferson.
College Partnership Tanya Shuford College Partnership Program’s program goals are to increase the academic achievement of students and to increase the number of students, particularly first generation and minority students, who enroll in CPP and succeed in college. The CPP creates opportunities for students to successfully navigate the home, school, college, and work continuum. Participating colleges and universities sponsor a variety of activities to increase students’ and parents’ knowledge and understanding of higher education programs and college life and to enhance students’ motivation for higher academic achievement.
Creative Writing Club Joyana Peters The main objective of the Creative Writers' Club is to provide an opportunity for Marshall's creative writers to exchange, read, and critique their creative work in a relaxed environment. This club also provides an opportunity to plan writing-related events and enjoy the company of fellow creative writers.
Cricket Club (interest only) Jim Robinson The purpose of the cricket club is bring students together who are interested in the sport of cricket. Students can learn about the fundamentals of the game and current happenings in the sport.
Ears for Tales Matt Kirk Ears for Tales gives students the opportunity to visit nursing home in the community and read stories.
Earth Force Barbara Brown Earth Force engages young people as active citizens who improve the environment and their communities now and in the future. Earth Force works on student-led projects and initiatives dealing with environmental issues.
FAAD/SADD Barbara Brown To provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions. SADD has become a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes Cheryl Fischer The FCA Mission: To present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the Church. All students are welcome to join in the fellowship regardless of religious background or athletic interests.
Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Martha Noone The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a club which provides a place for all students, of whatever sexual orientation, to feel welcome and comfortable. The group aims to raise awareness of issues facing gay and lesbian students, who face physical and mental abuse at a much higher rate than other students.
GO Club Tim Kane

The purpose of the Go club is for students with a common interest in the Asian board game, Go, to meet and compete against fellow classmates. There is a possibility students may travel to other schools to play in tournaments.
Guitar Club Paul Vesilind The guitar club meets to provide students with a chance to learn guitar and/or improve their playing ability.
Hip Hop Club Sandra Lennon Hip hop club aims to bring students together who have an appreciation for hip hop music and dance.
International Club Sanaa Itayem International Club is open to all students interested in the cultures, languages, and traditions of other nations. Its purpose is to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of foreign cultures within the school community.
Knitter's Club Martha Noone Knitting Club membership is open to all students in order to provide a location and time where student knitters can meet to practice, share projects, and learn to knit with one another. The goal of the Knitting Club is to promote the love of knitting to others and teach more students how to knit. The Knitting Club meets regularly throughout the school year.
Marshall Spacemen Janet Kahn

Students who are interested in joining the Marshall Spacemen will learn about pulsars and other astronomical objects. They will analyze data collected by the George Byrd Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia which contains plots of radio signals being emitted by objects in space, as well as objects on Earth.
Medical Science Club Sunny Nieh Medical Science Club’s purpose is to educate the school community on health issues, as well as, aid the school and community in service. 
Odyssey of the Mind Brian Kane Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level.
Optimist/Octagon Club Julie Veenstra The Optimist/Octagon Club strives to make the school community a better place through volunteerism and community service.
Photo Club Elizzabeth Jeffs Photo Club is dedicated to learning, teaching, practicing, and exhibiting photographic art.
Red Cross Club Helen Schaefer American Red Cross school clubs are youth service groups that help the Red Cross fulfill its humanitarian mission of preparing for, preventing and responding to emergencies. Working closely with our local chapter and a school advisor, club members participate in Red Cross service projects that help their schools, their communities and the world.
SAAC (Students Against Animal Cruelty) Andrea Wallace SAAC is a club committed to increasing awareness about the humane treatment of animals.  We strive to educate individuals about animal cruelty and prevention.  We do this by volunteering with local organizations, collecting donations for local shelters, rescue leagues and humane societies, and much more. 
Science Olympiad Erica Ulch Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically-literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.  These goals are achieved by participating in Science Olympiad tournaments and non-competitive events, incorporating Science Olympiad into classroom curriculum and attending teacher training institutes.
Ski and Board Club (Interest Only) James Macindoe

Students will meet to share experience, knowledge, and stories of accomplishments. At meetings, mountain etiquette and fashion will also be discussed.

Young Democrats of America James Robinson The Young Democrats of America (YDA) is the largest youth-led, national, partisan political organization. YDA mobilizes young people to participate in the electoral process, influences the ideals of the Democratic Party, and develops the skills of the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local and national level.
Young Republicans Club Beth Wilson The Young Republicans are the oldest political youth organization in the United States. Important to the growth of the Republican Party, the YRs reach out to registered Republicans, and provide them with better political knowledge and understanding of the issues of the day.
