WHAT is the International Baccalaureate?

  • An internationally recognized high school diploma
  • A blend of the academic programs of many countries
  • A rigorous academic program for 11th and 12th grade students
  • A superior preparation for college or university

HOW did Marshall become an IB school?

  • 1996: Marshall submitted its Application to the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva; Teachers were recruited and sent to IB training seminars
  • 1996-97: IB Affiliation year: Pre-IB courses were initiated for underclass students
  • 1997-98: first IB Participation year: Senior candidates took selected Standard Level exams (for certificates only); Junior candidates began the full IB program (Diploma and/or Certificate)
  • 1998-99 to present: First IB Diploma graduates. All IB candidates take Higher and Standard Level exams in May

WHERE does the IB fit into the total Marshall program?

  • IB has replaced AP courses and exams (except in subjects without an IB counterpart)
  • All regular courses continue to be offered
  • All IB students fulfill Virginia State and Fairfax County graduation requirements
  • Students may elect to participate in the full IB Diploma or to take individual IB courses for Certificates

WHO takes IB courses at Marshall?

  • Juniors and Seniors who are very academically motivated and who have met prerequisites are eligible to enroll in IB classes
  • Students who are more interested in learning than in just getting high grades
  • Students who return to Marshall from living abroad and attending International Schools there
  • Students who wish to enter foreign universities or the most highly competitive US universities
  • Students in grades 9 and 10 may enroll in Pre-IB (formerly "GT") courses

WHEN do students make decisions about taking IB courses?

  • At least one Pre-IB year should precede taking IB subjects; for example, Pre-IB English 10, followed by IB English I and II (Remember: nearly all IB courses are two-year subjects.) If possible, Pre-IB classes are recommended for grades 9 and 10.
  • Diploma students need to begin foreign language and algebra while at intermediate school
  • All students should discuss IB options with their Guidance Counselor; Diploma students need to have a conference with the IB Coordinator prior to entering the program (usually during grade 9 or 10.)
