JMHS Student Services:

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you call for homework?

When a student will be out for 3 or more days, please contact the Student Services Administrative Assistant, Ms. Hendelman, at 703-319-2322. She will send out a request to the student's teachers for assignments; a minimum of 24 hours is needed in order to collect assignments from teachers. Assignments can be picked up in the Student Services Office. Students absent 1-3 days should have a student they contact in their classes to check on homework. All requested assignments are expected to be completed prior to the student's return.

Who do you call if you have a question about a class?

When a parent has a question about a class -- whether it is about a grade, an assignment, or a problem -- contact the teacher directly. Contact information for all teachers is available here.

How do you set up a conference with teachers?

For a conference with one teacher, please contact the teacher directly. For a conference with more than one teacher, contact the appropriate counselor.

How do you monitor what your student is doing in class?

24-7 Learning:

aka BlackBoard.

Student Planners:

This is a wonderful tool to use for monitoring assignments on a regular basis. Students should daily write down their assignments in their planners.

They should write something for each class, even if they do not have a specific assignment, such as "no homework, review pages 67-71." It is important to discuss what a student is doing in each class on a daily basis.

Bi-Weekly Academic Progress Reports:

Teachers send bi-weekly academic progress reports home via email for each student at least every two weeks.

Is tutoring available?

Many teachers offer after school hours one or two days a week to help students with assignments. Please contact them directly to find out what days they are available.

Free tutoring is offered by members of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Language Honor Societies for any student who needs extra help.

A GREAT place to receive additional help is in Guided Study in Room 152.
