The mission of the FCPS ESOL program is to develop the English proficiency of students while advancing their academic achievement and to support them in becoming productive, contributing citizens in the United States and an ever-changing global society. We strive to uphold this mission at Madison High School.
English to Speakers of Other Languages Power Standards
Power Standards are organized by ESOL level and strand.
A Level
Writing
- Students will begin to recognize basic structures including sound-symbol relationships and word and sentence structures in writing
- Students will begin to apply grammatical concepts such as part of speech, present and past verb tenses, subject/verb agreement, and sentence completeness
- Students will begin to apply mechanical concepts and skills such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling
- Students will build writing skills from phrase to complete sentences to structured paragraphs
- Students will begin to organize writing logically around a main idea
- Students will use the interactive components of the writing process: prewriting, revising, editing, sharing, and publishing
- Students will learn different forms of writing such as journals, reports, essays, letters, compositions, and note-taking
- Students will develop and apply technology skills in the context of the writing process
- Students will recognize different purposes for writing
- Students will learn to use reference materials such as dictionaries, maps, texts, print and electronic encyclopedias, and the Internet appropriately
Reading
- Students will read to gain information and develop academic language proficiency
- Students will develop and practice reading strategies
- Students will practice note taking and organizational skills
- Students will use cognates to build vocabulary
- Students will begin to accept responsibility for selecting literature to read
- Students will read and understand major literary genres
- Students will read and respond in a variety of ways to literature
- Students will begin to understand literary concepts such as character, plot, setting, conflict, and resolution
- Students will begin to recognize literature in terms of genres, themes, and literary elements
- Students will recognize literary works as an expression of the universal experience, as well as a reflection of a particular culture
Oral
- Students will develop communicative and academic language proficiency
- Students will employ strategies to improve oral comprehensibility
- Students will plan and make oral presentations
- Students will listen to a variety of materials to build vocabulary, acquire language patterns, express ideas, and develop fluency
- Students will recognize the concept of sounds and phrases as units of meaning
- Students will express and support opinions orally
- Students will learn to use self-monitoring strategies while speaking
- Students will develop speaking and listening skills through participation in group activities and discussions
- Students will use reading aloud or oral interpretation to develop knowledge, enjoyment, and aesthetic appreciation of the sound and sense of language
