Academic Subject Clubs
Environmental Science Contact: Dick Gongaware
Care about the environment and your local surroundings? The Environmental Club not only cares, but does something about it. The club recycles within the school, performs fund-raising for the courtyard improvement project, participates in stream clean-ups, tree plantings, field trips, and more. We also place a Madison student in an ad hoc environmental post on the Vienna Town Council. You can make a difference if you choose to.

Envirothon Contact: Kirk Smith
Do you want to learn more about the environment? Need to get your senior science investigation project out of the way? Compete with Envirothon! This club meets once a week.

French Contact: Valerie Howell
The French Club meets monthly to explore French culture and
language. The students elect officers who work with the club
members to decide which aspects of Francophone life will be
experienced. Movies, food, music, holidays and fashion are
just some of the aspects explored. The "Pause Café" will meet
on days other than the club meetings to give students the chance
to practice speaking French in a relaxed setting. Any student
currently studying, or who has studied French in the past,
is welcome to join.
Latin Contact: Albert Gunn
The Latin Club celebrates ancient Roman culture and customs through various activities throughout the year. The club holds a yearly Saturnalia celebration, reenacting the Roman celebration of Saturn’s Golden Age, where the first became the last and the last became the first. The club also marches in the Homecoming Parade, visits museum exhibits, and goes to living history events like Roman Days.

The various language clubs that are offered
at Madison provide the students an opportunity
to explore similar cultural interests and knowledge abut a particular
language. These clubs explore the languages in more detail than
the standard classroom setting. All language clubs meet regularly
after school, and schedules are determined by the club officers
and their sponsors.

Math League (Junior and Senior) Contact: Erin Himmelberger & Carol Cline
Math club members are students who relish
the idea of solving complex math equations and intricate word problems. In
the past, bi-weekly challenges were held to assess students' knowledge
in different areas of math. Math club meets one afternoon a week
after school to work out these math problems, share snacks, and
have a few laughs.
Science Olympiad Contacts: Scott VanBenschoten
Open to all grade levels, this club welcomes anyone who in enthusiastic about science. A select handful of seniors are eligible to compete. Meetings are usually held once a month.

Athletic Clubs
Crew Contact: Jessica Wallace

Founded in 2002, the Warhawk crew team in its short history has won bronze, silver and gold medals at the VA State Championships that bring together over 1,500 HS rowers every year. The team has gone to Nationals every year since its founding and four of our members have received full college scholarships. Crew team members practice on the Occoquan, at Sandy Run, where almost all the regattas are held, as well as the Potomac. The team also competes annually at Stotesbury, the oldest high school competition in the U.S, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. In the winter, the team does voluntary conditioning at school. Although the commitment is significant, crew team members hold a special bond not only for the strength they gain but friendships made.

Color Guard Contact: Debra Barlow
Color Guard is a yearlong activity that performs as a part of Marching Band in the fall and as an independent performing ensemble in the winter. Members perform with flags and other equipment to enhance the visual element of the marching performance. After Marching Band Season, members of Color Guard also participate in Winter Guard, which rehearses regularly and travels to competitions. Winter guard mixes elements of twirling, dance, choreography and gymnastics for a fast-paced, precise and colorful competition. The JMHS Marching Band was the 2005 USSBA Class 5 Virginia State Champions, and the esteemed Winter Guard has won 1st place in two Atlantic Indoor Association 2006 competitions and was promoted two levels from Regional A to A3 in recent years. The Madison Guard has a great tradition to build upon.

Also known as the "Pride of Vienna," these
musically inclined students were able to play an instrument of
their choice, and devoted countless hours of time performing at
many concerts over the course of the year. These students also
perform at the home football games, attend band camp, and travel
to compete in national competitions.

Choir students all share a passion for
singing. They attend extra rehearsals in order to share their
talent with the school and community, and they hold a number of
different fundraising activities throughout the year.

DECA allows students interested in
marketing the opportunity to work with this subject at a higher level. Students involved
in this club compete at the district, state and national levels,
which can take place all over the country. Being a part of DECA

This particular group of talented students works in class, during school hours, and after school to perfect approximately three major performances a year. Their Cappie award-winning program’s 2007-2008 season included Twelfth Night, the winter one-acts, and Fiddler on the Roof.

FBLA is a co-curricular organization that stands for Future Business
Leaders of America. It is made up of regions centered around a
state college or university. In
Virginia,
eleven separate regions have been developed to accommodate the
growing number of members within the organization. FBLA activities
are divided into five areas: Business and Information Technology
Knowledge and Skills, School and Community Service, Leadership
and Promotion, Financial, and Social.

The Madrigals are a small, select group of students who are considered
to have a phenomenal talent for singing. Many at
Madison have referred to these students as "the
cream of the crop" when it comes to vocals. One of the school's
favorite Madrigal contributions is when they walk through the
halls during the holiday season caroling at the classroom doors. No
matter what teachers are doing, everyone always stops to enjoy
for a moment the eloquent voices of the madrigal singers.

Students audition for placement into one of the three orchestras:
Concert, Symphonic and Philharmonic. Orchestra students perform several concerts and events throughout the year at various venues, and have opportunities to perform in individual events also such as Solo/Ensemble Festival and Senior Recital. Their many hours of practice is evident when they enter contests and place, as well as when they play for audiences in the community.

Student Athletic
Trainers Contact: Al Soumah
This organization is an opportunity for students who are interested in
learning about sports medicine to attain some hands-on experience
in this field. Students are able to implement what they learn
in the classroom at various sporting events with the guidance
of the Athletics Training staff. They often assist inured athletes by providing
ice and answering questions pertaining to the injury.

The mission of Madison High School's student government is to demonstrate
the principles of democratic government and the responsibilities
of the individual student, thereby promoting appreciation of
membership in a democratic body, allowing students the opportunity
to participate in self-government, helping with coordination
of extra-curricular activities, fostering a closer relationship
between students, faculty and administration, encouraging school
spirit, and demanding the best possible academic environment. SGA
plays a major role in helping plan and coordinate various student
activities within the school-such as Homecoming, pep rallies,
dances, Mr. Madison contests, canned food drives, and spirit
days. All classes are represented in the SGA. Membership is
through election to the Executive Board and Class Office or the
interview process for cabinet positions.

Madison is home to an array of honor societies, which are reserved
for students particularly committed to their education. A 3.5
grade-point average is required for the vast majority of the
societies, and each society's intent is to foster and encourage
a deep interest in the subject at hand. These societies conduct
activities and services within the school, as well as the community. One
of the duties of some of these honor societies is to provide
tutoring after school to those that need further assistance with
a specific subject. Members receive a certificate for their
dedication at the end of the year.

Hawk Talk (School Newspaper) Contact:

The school newspaper is published
monthly by students taking this class as an elective. The
newspaper is always something that students look forward to
reading because it updates them not only on the current events
that were taking place in their small environment known as
Madison, but the world around them as well.

Heritage (School Literary Magazine) Contact: Ryan Brown
For any student who holds the dream
of being published at a young age, there is something to be said
about being published in The Heritage. This special magazine
showcases works of all kinds: fiction, non-fiction, poetry and
art. Students interested in being published in this annual magazine
must submit their work for approval and acceptance. Members of
this organization read through the submissions and choose what
pieces to publish. The magazine is issued towards the end of
the school year, and students published, as well as the group
members themselves, are acknowledged for their pieces.

Yearbook Contact: Francesca Branson
Members of the yearbook staff work
diligently throughout the year, taking pictures, writing captions,
interviewing the student body, and creating catchy topics to
include in the yearbook. The purpose of the yearbook staff
is to work together to preserve the memories that are created
that school year, and then organize them in a memorable way. Students
every year anxiously await the distribution of the yearbooks.

Service Clubs
Peer Helping Contact: Melissa Blockis
Peer Helpers are students within the school setting who are trained by a school professional to help other students. They often assist by “listening, providing information and referring students to others in the building with the necessary expertise that they need.” In addition, they educate and work with the community on need based issues. During the course, students will focus on the following topics:
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- Learning how to be effective listeners
- Self-exploration
- Self-esteem building
- Decision Making/Problem Solving
- Substance Abuse Prevention
- Becoming an effective group leader

The Key Club is a community service
club that works with local Kiwanis. These students work to raise
money for various community service activities. One of their
most popular fundraisers last year was when they sold boxes of
candy around school. The members also work with Illiff Nursing Home and do more than just raise money. It’s a great way to help out the community and make great friends.

The Octagon Club is a community service club dedicated to making a difference in both Madison and the Vienna community. In the past, volunteers have donated their time and energy for the Cops and Kids Fun Run, UNICEF, and collecting books for those less fortunate.

Students Against Destructive
Decisions is another of our school's wonderful community service
clubs. This past year they held a canned food drive to help
restock shelves of a local food bank, and they held a very
popular canned food dance. Students only had to bring ten
cans of food as admission to the dance in lieu of money.

Amnesty International Contact: Ryan Douds & Andrea Jones
Amnesty International is an international organization that campaigns for the protection of human rights around the world. Students participate in letter-writing campaigns, and through documentaries and teach-ins, learn about violations of human rights that unfortunately continue to exist. This club also raises money through activities such as Jamnesty Coffeehouse. Amnesty International at Madison collaborates with chapters from other local high schools on large projects and aims to educate the local community about urgent human rights issues.

Club is a group of students who are devoted to the genre
of Japanese animation
known as Anime. They meet weekly to view Anime and discuss art of Anime,

The Art Club allows students time
to work on art in a friendly environment and with supplies available
to them. It also allows students who are unable to take an art
class an opportunity to have the same experiences that an art
class would. Meetings are "open studio" style, meaning member
can come and go as they like, and work on any projects they choose.

The BSA organization is an opportunity for the students to be a part of something that helps them with school-related and social problems. BSA meets once every two weeks, on Wednesdays. We sit amongst one another and discuss grades, social issues, and provide advice and help to those who need it. Furthermore, we discuss current events and how to get involved in extra-curricular activities.

The Medical Youth Society (MYS) was established in June 2007. The Medical Youth Society (MYS) encourages leadership and volunteering in medicine and health facilities as well as nursing homes and various hospitals. Forensics Contact: Defunct at this time
The National Forensic League is one of two major U.S. national organizations which direct high school competitive speech events. The officials vote on each rule change, which affects the entire high school forensics community. The word "forensic" is an adjective meaning "of public debate or argument." The word is derived from the Latin word forensis, meaning "of the forum." The sense of the word "forensic" that means "pertaining to legal trials" dates from the 1600s (Oxford English Dictionary) and led to the use of the word "forensics" in reference to legal evidence.

club is for you! It's Academic is about knowing facts and
figures and then competing as teams on the regional t.v. show. Questions
are difficult and thought-provoking, but the challenge is a
fun one. Think of the television quiz show Jeopardy: that's a pretty close match to this club.
