Madison's Moniri commits to Indiana
By: Dave Buschenfeldt
The Times
05/17/2007
Madison senior first baseman Arman Moniri has committed to play baseball next year at Division I Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

Moniri, a four-year starter for the Warhawks, has been a first team All-Liberty District selection the past two seasons and was named second team All-Region as a junior last year. He chose the Hoosiers, a member of the Big Ten Conference, over Miami of Ohio and Louisville University.

With Moniri's decision, Liberty District regular season champion Madison now has seven seniors committed to play collegiate baseball next year, six with Div. I programs. Pitcher Jason Farley (Virginia Military Institute), shortstop Rich Conlon (University of Maryland-Baltimore County), pitcher/outfielder Sterling Sams (UMBC), catcher Alex Andrews (Mount St. Mary's University), pitcher Sam Gilbert (University of Pennsylvania) and pitcher Brad Wimmer (Frederick Community College) have also committed.

Student Government elections

The voices of the student body have been heard, and the results follow. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this election possible--in particular the administrators, guidance counselors and class sponsors who helped the speeches take place in such an orderly manner on Tues., the social studies teachers who brought their classes to Warhawk Hall each period for two days--and the teachers of our senior SGA members who allowed them to be student election officers on Wed. and Thurs. The Electoral Board officers from Fairfax County were most complimentary of the students, faculty, and school climate they observed during their two days on duty at Madison.

Robotics

Please join me in congratulating those students who participated in the NASA/VCU Regional FIRST Robotics Competition this past weekend (3/3) in Richmond, Virginia. The James Madison HS Robotics Club was ranked First out of 66 teams and made it to the semi-finals!
The students had just six weeks to conceptualize, design, build, program, test and ship their robot. This year's competition involved robots being able to hang pool tubes on a rack for (2) points on a tic tac toe board on a revolving cylinder. But before the match was over, they had to race back to their home field and try to get two of the team robots up on top of the third robot with a ground clearance of 12 inches for 30 points. Here is where Madison's strategy paid off. We went into this competition focused on the big points. We built a robot that could drive and open up to offer a ramp and platform for other robots to drive up on. Needless to say, we won a lot of matches, which placed us as the top seeded team.
Calculus/Trig, Geometry, Physics, communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking were all utilized to make our team successful.

Canned Food Drive

The Madison community's tradition of generosity and good citizenship is alive and well with this year's record can drive results of 7,034 lbs. of food for Food for Others.

Kudos to Mary Ann Barton and all the SGA students who worked hard promoting and collecting the items and to the SADD students who collected cans at the TJ football game, CAN Dance and helped box the donations. And a special thanks to all of you who went out of your way to help those disadvantaged and less fortunate in OUR COMMUNITY.

Well done, Warhawks!

Canned Food Drive Winners (and their average cans per student):

  • 1st place   Mr. Rigsby with 37.88 cans per student
  • 2nd place  Ms. Glassman with 37.5 cans per student
  • 3rd place  Ms. Rawlinson (top performer with a smaller class) with 34.4 cans per student

These classes will receive an IHOP breakfast on Tuesday, November 21 during 3rd pd.

Ms. Karban with 32.3 cans per student will receive a deluxe doughnut breakfast on Nov. 21.

The best part of all—many families in our own community will have much-needed food on their tables.  Our total collection is in excess of 8,000 items!

Thanks to each of you who helped the cause.

--Mary Ann Barton
