National French Awards

In honor of their outstanding performance on 'Le Grand Concours' a National French Language Exam the following Madison students received recognition in the form of a medal, certificate and T-shirt from the Society of Teachers of French at a ceremony on May 29, 2008, at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School.

Congratulations to the track team, as they are sending 14 athletes to the Regional meet.

The top 3 finishers were:
The boys 100 meter relay team of TJ Davison, Jeric Espiritu, Cesar Via, and David Robinson earned bronze medals.
Alisa Harrison was second in the shot put
Hayley Schaefer was 3rd in the pole vault
And Brigid Byrne was 3rd in the 3200 meter run

Crew

The Varsity Warhawk Crew had three boats on the winners’ dock at VA state competition.
Men’s 1st 8 Won Gold; Women’s 1st 4 won Bronze and Women’s 2nd 4 won Silver.

The Men’s Light Weight 8 rowers earned gold medals plus the oldest, still circulating scholastic rowing trophy: The Brother’s Trophy. Sophomore rower Tom Houston shares winning this trophy with his Dad Rusty, who rowed for the Washington-Lee team, winning in 1979.

The lightweight 8 boat was made up of Jun Cho, Tom Houston; Matt Pepper; Mark Graziano; Sahand Dilmaghani; Samantha Lee; Alex Lejeune; Chris Church; Led by Coaches Gary Goddard and Jeff Camisso.

The Men’s Varsity 1st 4 finished 4th in the Petite Finals.

Crew

crew trophy The Warhawk Crew team entered three boats in the Ted Phoenix Regatta, which is the NCASRA run Lower Boat Championships. All the rowers were first year competitors.  The 1,500 meter race course is on the Occoquan River. The Madison Women’s Novice 4 took a first place with a time of 5:50.6. The winning rowers were freshman Mariah Redman and McKenzie Riordan and upperclassmen Erin Lawless and Lena Amad. This earned the Madison team its first gold and trophy in this Championship Regatta. . Madison’s other novice boats made the Petite finals; the Boy’s Freshman 8 finished 2nd: 5:07.2 and, the Freshman Girl’s 8, finished 3rd: 5:46.8.

Photography Award

Porter photo Carlyn Porter is the grand prize winner of the Adirondack Life’s magazine photography contest. The judges were impressed with her photo of Shroon Lake Woods – “the vibrant colors, the spirit of a solitary moment captured so effectively, and a sophisticated composition with a fresh take on an Adirondack scene.” As the grand prize winner, Carlyn was awarded attendance at its Adirondack Fall Photography Weekend, October 2-5.

eCybermission

Please congratulate the following freshman who competed in the eCybermission competition for their Independent Research Project for Honors Biology.

Language Competition

Congratulations to Matt Chappell and Steve Shade who represented Madison in the Modern Language Tournament at George Mason High School on Saturday, April 19.  Chapeau!

Band & Orchestra

Congratulations to the Madison High School Orchestras and Symphonic Band for their success at the Heritage Festival Music Competition in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!! Both Symphonic Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra placed first in their individual classes. The Philharmonic Orchestras took first place overall in the orchestral competition. The Symphonic band put on a tremendous performance and placed second overall in their competition. All of our performing groups received Adjudicator Awards--the highest award given in each category.

The overall most prestigious award that Heritage Festivals offers is the Spirit Award. This is presented to the ensembles of the school that best represents their state in competition. This year Madison High School came home with the Spirit Award.

Well done Madison musicians! Please congratulate all of the students in the band and orchestra on a fantastic performance!

FBLA

Congratulations to Betsy Khol for her recent win at FBLA state competition---5th place in Word Processing II. Matt Zepp also represented Madison and our region at States for Banking and Financial Procedures.

Winter Guard

Congratulations to the JMHS Winter Guard for placing 2nd in the AIA (Atlantic Indoor Association) circuit championships held April 5th at CD Hylton High School.  After winning the Saturday's Preliminary competition, the MAD Guard put on a spectacular performance of their show - Tennis Anyone? - to secure 2nd place in class A3.

National Latin Exam

Congratulations to those who took and did well on the National Latin Exam. Those who took Summa Cum Laude Gold Medals were: Rebekah Stites, Anderson Green, Jesse Evans and Nils Niemeier. Boys and girls track finished second to Langley in the April 2nd meet at JMHS.
Corey Lofton won the mile
Kristen Bell won the triple jump
Duncan Hartt won the high hurdles, the high jump and the long jump,
Allison Simpson won the shot put
And Jaleece Durham won the 100 meter dash.  Way to go track team!

Chris Church Art Honors

Congratulations to Chris Church for winning a NATIONAL Scholastics Art and Writing Silver Key award for his art portfolio! Chris' portfolio was sent to New York City after winning a Gold Key regionally. He competed against hundreds of thousands of students nationally and won the very prestigious Silver Key award and a number of scholarships! Chris will attend an awards ceremony in New York City and his work will be showcased in Carnegie Hall for a month. In addition, Chris' work will be published in the Scholastics Art and Writing's annual book.

The art department is very proud of Chris. If you know Chris, please take a moment congratulate him as this is a huge accomplishment!

Chess

A small but strong contingent from Madison high School took home the 4th place trophy at the VA State Scholastic Chess Championships held on March 8-9th 2008 at Lake Braddock High School.

Adam Hood ('11) won an individual trophy for 16th place finish and Jimmy Wang ('08) and Daniel Nothaft ('11) won medals tied for 25th place.

Indoor Track

The Track team finished its season with many personal bests at the Northern Region meet on Saturday.
The girls 4x200m relay team of  Sara Diggs, Kristen Bell, Laura Wolff, and Charlotte Diggs ran their best time of the season, 1:50.23 to finish 8th and earn medals!
Sara Diggs was also 8th in the long jump and 9th in the triple jump. Both were her best for the season.
Cesar Via was 9th in the 55 meter dash, tying his best time of the season

The boys relay team also ran their best time of the season 1:36.82
The team was led off by Jeric Espiritu, then Mike Sills, David Robinson and anchored by Cesar Via.

Charlotte Diggs ran a great 300 meter race narrowly missing the state meet.
Rachel Underhill ran her best time finishing 13th overall
Annmarie Irwin ran a good race to finish out her season in the 3200 meter run. 
Mary Claire Zimpelman tied her best jump of the season in the high jump to finish 13th.

Engineering Competition

Please congratulate the members of Team SuperNOVA, Katja Engle, Mark Graziano, and Bethany Reeve, for their success in the GMU Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Competition, part of Engineering Week at GMU.  The team won the "Best Estimated Load" category, and will receive $50.

Book Drive Competition

The Read To Me and Octagon Clubs would profoundly like to thank everyone who participated in the recent book drive. Ms. Stoyas' class came in first place with 350 books. Mr. Doud's class took second place with 323 books and Ms. Barton's class rounded out the top three with 315 books.  A big thanks for all who participated.

State Swim & Dive Competition

Please congratulate the following swimmers for their outstanding performances at the Virginia State Swim & Diving Competition this past weekend.
Senior John Schnittker earned 1st place and a STATE RECORD ALL AMERICAN time of 1:40.29 in the 200 Free as well as 3rd place and an All American consideration time of 47.16 in the 100 Free.
Junior Sean Fletcher earned 1st place and a STATE RECORD ALL AMERICAN time of 48.97 in the 100 Fly and 1st place with an All American time of 51.54 in the 100 Back.
Junior Robbie Parker earned a 2nd place and an All American Consideration time of 21.51 in the 50 Free.
Soph. Adam Pennington earned 10th place in the 500 Free with a time of 4:45.92 and 16th place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:48.36.
All four young men earned 2nd place in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:26.71 and 2nd place in the 400 Free relay with a time of 3:08.79 - THESE ARE MADISON RECORDS!
Overall, Schnittker, Fletcher, Parker, and Pennington earned 169 points for the 3rd place Boys Team in the State.

All State Choir

29 Madison students participated in the District Chorus.  From this auditioned choir, juniors and seniors are eligible to then audition to be a part of the elite All State choir which performs in April. Only 22 singers total are taken out of 200.   This year, Madison had 4 students and 1 alternate chosen for this choir.  This is an outstanding achievement for the following singers:

Congrats to all of those that are going on to Regionals for the track team.

The girls scored 52 points to finish 4th in the district; the boys were 7th

  • The girls 4x2 team of Sara Diggs, Kristen Bell, Laura Wolff, and Charlotte Diggs ran a great race to finish 2nd in the district.
  • The boys 4x2 of Jeric Espiritu, David Robinson, Mike Sills, and Cesar Via finished 3rd to also make it to regionals
  • Charlotte Diggs won the 300 meter dash.
  • Sara Diggs won three silver medals (long jump and triple jump and the 4x2 relay)
  • Rachel Underhill was 6th in the 300
  • Cesar Via finished 4th in the 55 dash
  • Laura Wolff had a big personal record in the Triple jump to finish 6th
  • Mary Claire Zimpelman was 5th in the high jump

Wind Symphony

The James Madison High School Wind Symphony was selected by audition as one of 16 high school bands in the United States to participate in the 2008 National Concert Band Festival.  This national festival is taking place from February 28 – March 1, 2008, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Theater

Congratulations to Madison's "One Act Play" team for finishing 2nd in the Liberty District tournament (1/26/08). Congratulations to theater advisor, Marshall Henderson, and best wishes for success in Regional competition.

Swim & Dive

Track Team

The track team competed on Wednesday, January 16, at Prince George's County  sports and Learning  Center.  The girl's placed fifth out of  20 schools,  and  the boys team placed fourth. We had many medal winners:  Annmarie Irwin ('10) won the 3200,   Jade Zaharoff was third, Duncan Hartt  won  triple  and was 3rd in long jump,  Lauren Zell was second in the mile, Corey Lofton was third in the mile,  and Zach Queen placed third in the two mile.  Good job track team!

It's Academic

Congratulations to Madison's Its Acadamic Team who came in second at their Jan. 12 taping of the show. It was a hard fought match which came down to the final question. Be sure to tune in to the Its Academic show on Saturday, March 1st at 10:30am on NBC Channel 4 to see the excitement for yourself.

Art

Ping Lee was chosen by her classmates as having created the "Best Ecozine Magazine Layout."

Foreign Language

Congratulations to Mike Lacy and Katie Stolp, whose reviews of Lee High School's performance of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream were selected for inclusion in the Lance, the school paper for Lee High School.

Canned Food Drive

This year's Canned Food Drive brought in 11,427 non-perishable food items.  Well done, Madison!

Congratulations to Ms. Schmidt's class, the recipient of the IHOP breakfast, having brought in 3,023 cans (116 cans per person!). 

In addition, congratulations to the four classes meeting the benchmark for the doughnut breakfast:

Mr. Hernandez with 89 cans per person (1,697 total!)
Mr. Bell with 35 cans per person
Ms. Madero with 33 cans per person
Ms. Wagner with 32 cans per person

On Monday (11/19) Ms. Schmidt's 3rd pd. class is invited to come to the cafeteria at 9:45 a.m. for the IHOP breakfast, and doughnut breakfasts will be delivered during 3rd pd. to the other 4 winning classes.  Of course, the true winners are the many families whose hunger will be eased by the generous donations from many amazing 3rd pd. classes at Madison.  This has been Madison's largest Canned Food Drive ever.  Thanks for your participation!

Senior Honors Choir & District Chorus

Ann Louise Thaiss was selected to sing in the Senior Honors Choir. This is the top honor for a singer in the entire state. She will perform in Norfolk with this elite group (11/15-6).

And, we had a record number 29 students audition successfully into our District Chorus. This choir is made up of the top singers from all the high schools in our district.

Coaches Golf Cup

Congratulations to the four Coaches representing Madison who won the 2nd Annual Coaches Golf Cup Challenge, sponsored by The Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Madison’s two regional finishers in cross country.  Corey Lofton ran 15:39 at the Regional meet at Burke Lake on Thursday to finish 10th place overall and qualify for the state meet.  It was the 5th best time ever by a Madison runner at the Burke Lake Course. Brigid Byrne was 25th in the girls race to finish a fine season.

School Paper

Exciting news!  Several members of the Hawk Talk staff traveled to VCU in Richmond to attend the annual VHSL journalism workshop and state championship.  The newspaper staff brought back a first place award based on a critique of last year's newspaper (this year's work was not a part of this competition). Congratulations to the 06/07 staff and best wishes to the 07/08 staff in carrying on the legacy of success!

Marching Band

Congratulations to the JMHS Marching Band for their outstanding performance at the Bands of America Towson Regional this past weekend! In the preliminary competition of 25 bands, JMHS was selected as one of the top10 bands to compete as a 2007 Regional Finalist. In the finals the band had a STUNNING performance. With this performance the band received a music score that was in 6th place and over all score of 9th place in the Regional. For the second year
