Upcoming Deadlines and Reminders
Yearbook distribution (continued)
If you have not picked up the yearbook you ordered--or if you wish to purchase one of the extras (which may run out soon--if not already), check with Ms. Branson.
Check in the Career Center for some good summer jobs and volunteer opportunities, including helping at the Oakton Library and Patrick Henry Library. More information is available in the Career Center or on Blackboard in the Department of Student Services section under Jobs.
FRESHMEN - Are you taking AP World History next year? If so your AP World teachers strongly recommend you read A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage over the summer. You can find it on Amazon or in paperback at any major bookseller. It’s a great read!!! We promise!
--Ms. Brittle

Ongoing Reminders
An important message from the Clinic:
Flu Season is upon us. Symptoms include: high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, fatigue and a dry cough. If it is just a cold, symptoms usually include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and a hacking cough.
Best way to avoid the bug is to practice healthy habits, such as:
- Washing your hands often with soap and water
- Keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
- Don’t share drinks, water bottles, eating utensils or cell phones
- Coughing into your sleeve, not your hands
- Using a tissue to blow your nose, then throwing it away
If you think you have the flu, talk with your parents about seeing a doctor. Some antiviral medications may reduce the number of days you are sick. Please stay home. You should not return to school until you have been fever free for more than 24 hours.
he senior courtyard will be open every friday during S.A.P. So if you are a senior, and have nothing to do, go and hang out in the courtyard if it is nice day. Reminder, their are no sports or games allowed to be played in the courtyard.
Click here to learn which items are recylable and which are not.
The cafeteria staff would like you to know that you can add money to your lunch account at any time. Just give your money to any cashier. If you want to open a lunch account for the first time and need a Bar Code Number, please see the manager. Lunch accounts can be opened online by using your student ID number. Go to MyLunchMoney.Com. A $1.95 fee is charged for this service.
The cafeteria staff aims to provide you with the very best service possible.
Parking at Elk’s Lodge/Junior Lot:
All students parking in the Elk’s Lodge/Junior Lot are reminded that they cannot park in that lot after 3pm. If you have after school activities you must move your car onto James Madison property.
When buying qualifying school supplies from OFFICE DEPOT, be sure to relay Madison's "5% Back to Schools" code--70105118--in order for Madison High School to receive credits equal to 5% of the qualifying purchases to use for FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES.
This can be done for purchases at stores, as well as for ordering online: go to www.school.com, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on "5% Back to Schools Program" link under Programs. Thanks for thinking of us: every bit helps!
If you plan to create a Word file at home, and then email it to yourself to work on at school, you need to follow special instructions if you have the latest version of Word/Microsoft Office at home. Since the school computers use an older version of Word (2003), you will not be able to open your attachment unless you remember to do a “SAVE AS” and save your file at home into the 97-2003 format, and then email THAT version to yourself. Then, from school computers, you can open and work on your Word file. If you are not sure how to do this, please see Mr. Smith in room 210 or Mr. Landis in the library.
PLEASE back up and remove excess files from your network folders. When too many people save too many files to the server (especially large ones), at some point none of us will be able to save any files.
Have a suggestion for the school? Submit your ideas in the red suggestion box in the main office. Suggestions will be read directly by Mr. Merrell as well as the Student Concerns Committee.
All students must find somewhere to go during SAP. You can be in a teacher's classroom, the library, or the cafeteria; you may not be in the hallways.
Also, students are reminded that during lunch they must either go to the cafeteria or the library. Students are not allowed to eat lunch in the hallways.
When logging on to the school computers, if you type in the wrong password 3 times in a row, your network account will be LOCKED until the next day. Make sure the "caps lock" button is off.
Looking for a job? Please check
the listings in the Career Center.
Remember: there is an "I Forgot" table in the Attendance Office where students will be directed to leave items that are brought in for you from home. Please check the table if you are expecting a delivery, as we are unable to bring things to you in class.
Give the Gift of a Brick
Looking for a special way to honor a Madison student or teacher who has made
a difference? The Environmental Club, with the support of the PTSA,
is selling commemorative bricks to help pave the way for a new
outdoor courtyard. Order forms and information available
at www.fcps.edu/MadisonHS/Academics/documents/science/LeaveALegacy.pdf
More details:
The Madison Environmental Club, with
the support of the PTSA, has kicked off a major
fundraising effort to raise money to transform an outdoor
area into an outdoor classroom and courtyard. Now is your
chance to buy a commemorative brick to leave your
stamp at James Madison High School and help make this dream become
a reality!
These brick pavers with inscriptions will be installed in a courtyard
adjacent to a pond/wetland area (with waterfall!) for all to enjoy.
Order forms also are available on the Madison
web site or see Mr. Gongaware.
