This year's canned food drive has begun.  Please bring many canned goodsand other specified nonperishables—to your third period class.  The need is much greater this year, and there are rewards for individuals and for classes that contribute the most.  Following are items that are needed:canned fruit, meats, soup, tuna and vegetables.  You can also bring cereal, coffee and tea, fruit juice, peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, sugar and flour.  Every time you bring 5 or more items, you will be given a full-size candy bar.  3rd Period classes that donate the most per student can win donuts, bagels, or the top prize, a hot breakfast from IHOP.  Remember to bring your donations tomorrow!  More details can be found on the Madison SGA page.

Are you confused about whether to take the SAT or the ACT?  Or just nervous about that big, long, important test for college?  The PTSA wants to help.  Come take a practice test this Saturday morning (11/14 from 8:30am to noon) with the PTSA and the Princeton Review.  This test has parts of both the SAT and the ACT, so you can see how you do on both. Bring a check for $12 made out to "JMHS PTSA" (with "Practice SAT/ACT" written in the memo line) to the main office, or pay $15 at the door.  There's more information on the PTSA section of Madison's website.  So bring your calculator and number two pencils to the cafeteria Saturday morning, 8:30 until noon.  Those nice PTSA ladies will even give you donuts!

Ongoing Reminders

An important message from the Clinic:

Flu Season is upon us.  Symptoms include: high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, fatigue and a dry cough.   If it is just a cold, symptoms usually include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and a hacking cough.

Best way to avoid the bug is to practice healthy habits, such as:

    • Washing your hands often with soap and water
    • Keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
    • Don’t share drinks, water bottles, eating utensils or cell phones
    • Coughing into your sleeve, not your hands
    • Using  a tissue to blow your nose, then throwing it away

If you think you have the flu, talk with your parents about seeing a doctor.  Some antiviral medications may reduce the number of days you are sick. Please stay homeYou should not return to school until you have been fever free for more than 24 hours.

Do you know any adults who can be counted on to step up in the event of an emergency? The Medical Reserve Corps is looking for reliable adults in the Madison community to be trained to help if there is ever a need for mass vaccinations. The time commitment is minimal, but it's important to have volunteers who are ready if needed. Please tell your parents and other adults who live in our community to contact John Landis at jnlandis@fcps.edu or 703-319-2352.

You can buy Warhawk apparel every Wednesday this year from 6:45 until 7:15am in front of the main gym. Bring cash or checks made out to "JMHS." Check out this season's Warhawk fashions every Wednesday morning. Questions? See Mrs. Dooley.

The Cafeteria Staff are here to provide you with the very best service possible. If you have any questions about your lunch accounts or would like to open an account but not sure how to do it, or need to know your Bar Code number, you can see Mrs. Taylor in the cafeteria office located at the back of the kitchen. You can bring in your money or checks and give it to one of the cashiers and they will put it in your account. You can also go to MyLunchMoney.Com and open an account. There is a $1.95 fee for this service. We look forward to serving you.

Please help us move the lines through quickly by having your money or your Bar Code Number ready when you get up to the cashier. If you are not buying Breakfast or Lunch, PLEASE wait for your friends outside the lunch line doors so as not to hold up the lines by crowding the lines and playing around and disrupting the breakfast or lunch service. Thank you and have a wonderful year.

Ruth M. Taylor
Cafeteria Manager

The senior courtyard will be open every friday during S.A.P. So if you are a senior, and have nothing to do, go and hang out in the courtyard if it is nice day. Reminder, their are no sports or games allowed to be played in the courtyard.

Click here to learn which items are recylable and which are not.

The cafeteria staff would like you to know that you can add money to your lunch account at any time. Just give your money to any cashier.  If you want to open a lunch account for the first time and need a Bar Code Number, please see the manager.  Lunch accounts can be opened online by using your student ID number.  Go to MyLunchMoney.Com.  A $1.95 fee is charged for this service.

The cafeteria staff aims to provide you with the very best service possible.

Parking at Elk’s Lodge/Junior Lot:
All students parking in the Elk’s Lodge/Junior Lot are reminded that they cannot park in that lot after 3pm.    If you have after school activities you must move your car onto James Madison property.

When buying qualifying school supplies from OFFICE DEPOT, be sure to relay Madison's "5% Back to Schools" code--70105118--in order for Madison High School to receive credits equal to 5% of the qualifying purchases to use for FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES.

This can be done for purchases at stores, as well as for ordering online: go to www.school.com, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on "5% Back to Schools Program" link under Programs. Thanks for thinking of us: every bit helps!

If you plan to create a Word file at home, and then email it to yourself to work on at school, you need to follow special instructions if you have the latest version of Word/Microsoft Office at home. Since the school computers use an older version of Word (2003), you will not be able to open your attachment unless you remember to do a “SAVE AS” and save your file at home into the 97-2003 format, and then email THAT version to yourself. Then, from school computers, you can open and work on your Word file.  If you are not sure how to do this, please see Mr. Smith in room 210 or Mr. Landis in the library.

PLEASE back up and remove excess files from your network folders. When too many people save too many files to the server (especially large ones), at some point none of us will be able to save any files.

Have a suggestion for the school? Submit your ideas in the red suggestion box in the main office. Suggestions will be read directly by Mr. Merrell as well as the Student Concerns Committee.

All students must find somewhere to go during SAP. You can be in a teacher's classroom, the library, or the cafeteria; you may not be in the hallways.

Also, students are reminded that during lunch they must either go to the cafeteria or the libraryStudents are not allowed to eat lunch in the hallways.

When logging on to the school computers, if you type in the wrong password 3 times in a row, your network account will be LOCKED until the next day. Make sure the "caps lock" button is off.

Looking for a job? Please check the listings in the Career Center.

Remember: there is an "I Forgot" table in the Attendance Office where students will be directed to leave items that are brought in for you from home. Please check the table if you are expecting a delivery, as we are unable to bring things to you in class.
