March 2, 2007
Hi Folks! As we slowly move out of winter, we ask your help in keeping your student focused on school, as we often refer to this time of the year as the “academic dog days”!
Registration for next year’s classes
We are in the process of registering your students for their next year classes. We have already gone into the classrooms for all students, where we have gone over with them the courses they should be taking for next year. Students are then supposed to get signatures (on a yellow registration form) from their teachers for certain courses and then discuss with you those classes. Please sign the yellow form. The counselors will then call in your student individually to pick their courses for next year. If you have questions about your students’ suitability for a particular course, please contact the teacher directly. Please pay particular attention to the number of honors/AP courses that your student signs up for. We normally get nervous if your student signs up for more than 3, as the combined workload can be very daunting. Additionally, we expect that students who sign up for AP/Honors courses to attempt those courses for the entire year. The ability to drop those courses once the next school year starts is going to be extremely limited, so please choose wisely.
We definitely need your help in getting these forms back. Please ask your student to see it, have a discussion with them, and then sign the forms for them to bring back.
March 8th half day cancelled
Due to the amount of time missed because of the recent inclement weather, March 8, which was originally scheduled to be a half day staff development day for teachers, will now be a full day of school. All buses will arrive and depart at the regularly scheduled times.
Interims
3rd quarter interims will be distributed to students in school on Wednesday, March 7. Please ask to see them. Students who have failing interims will be required to attend Student Assistance Period to help raise these grades.
Blackboard.com
Don’t forget to visit the guidance site on blackboard.com for the latest guidance information and scholarships. You can access this site through your student’s FCPS account, although very soon parents will be able to get their own blackboard accounts.
Junior class Information
Junior College conferences
Counselors would like to meet with you and your student to discuss post high school plans and the application process. Please give your student’s counselor either a call or email and it will be arranged. This is usually a very productive conference, as it usually “jump starts” the college selection process as well as reviewing your student’s overall progress.
College Fair
A wonderful opportunity is coming for you to explore the many college options available at the Patriot Center at George Mason University on Wednesday, April 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. College representatives will be available to chat with you, answer questions, and give you information. This is an excellent time to get on their mailing list, so be sure to bring some address labels with you to put on the request cards. For a list of colleges that will be attending: http://admissions.gmu.edu/rsvp/attending.asp
