Teacher Technology Certification
The state of Virginia now requires teachers to obtain technology certification. Teachers at Madison are actively working to prepare for certification. The county has established courses, materials, and guidelines to assist.
Certification requires all teachers to master the following competencies:
- Word processing
- Spreadsheets
- Electronic slide presentations
- Access Database
- Integrating Technology into Lesson Planning
At Madison, teachers are encouraged to work towards these competencies, integrate e-mail into their teacher / parent communications, and expand their technical skills in innovative ways.
Jeannine Maynard is the School Based Technology Specialist. As part of her role at Madison, she provides classes to teachers after school in the certification competencies. Upon completion of the class, teachers demonstrate the use of the competencies in a lesson plan.
One example of the innovative use of the class competencies is Latin teacher Ann Renzy's web pages. She planned a lesson for her Latin students in building web pages, required students to use the Internet to search for original material during computer lab time in class, and put together their output into a set of pages on ancient Rome.
Support for teachers who would like help mastering competencies is available from Madison volunteers. If you would like to assist teachers in mastering these competencies and integrating them into the classroom, contact the PTSA Technology Now representative.
