Luther Jackson 7th and 8th Graders
Summer packets are now available for those students taking either Math 7 next year or Math 7 Honors or Math 8. The assignment is requred and will be due Sept. 7, the first Friday of the 2012-13 school year.
Everybody taking Algebra 1 next year should download and print out the Algebra 1 summer math packet.
All students in grades 5 through 12 in Fairfax County Public Schools are required to read at least one book over the summer. There will be an assignment related to this reading requirement during the first week of school. FCPS has prepared a suggested reading list for rising 7th and 8th graders(printer-friendly, 14-page pdf), which includes both fiction and nonfiction books on a wide variety of subjects, interests, and reading levels.
Anyone who reads at least 10 books over the summer and fills out our Passport to Summer Reading will be invited to an ice cream party in September. We'll also be posting the completed Passports on a bulletin board in the Library, so make sure you include a picture of yourself. Mr. Hassett and Ms. McKnight will be passing out cards during June booktalks in English 7 classes. The LJMS Library has also prepared a short checklist including the books discussed in these talks. Listen to the announcements for details. If you lose your Passport or need another one, it may be downloaded and printed from here.
FCHS 9th Graders
Each student enrolled in English 9 must read one of the books on the Ninth Grade Summer Reading List. Students enrolled in English 9 Honors must read two books. Students enrolled in non-honors English 9 next year may also consult the FCPS summer reading list. Students can purchase books or visit local libraries to attain copies of the books.
OHS 9th Graders
Students will read either The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell or The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth by Alexandra Robbins (or both) and be able to recall and discuss what they have read when they return to school in September. For more information about the books and the assignment, including discussion questions, please take a moment to read the attached assignment sheet from the OHS English Department (pdf).
If you will be attending a school other than Luther Jackson, Falls Church, or Oakton next year, please be sure to contact that school for specific assignments. Website links and contact information for all Fairfax County Public Schools may be found at www.fcps.edu in the Schools and Centers Directory.
