What Are You Doing This Summer?
- Jackson Summer Institutes engage life skills and learning opportunities that provide Fairfax County students in grades 6 through 9 with enrichment, personal growth, success, friendship, and fun, in diverse settings where there is always something for every one. In 1998, Luther Jackson Middle School was fortunate to be sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools and The Kevin Grevey Foundation with funding to run a free Algebra Institute and Basketball summer program for Jackson youth. These programs were designed not only to jump start the students for the coming year but expose them to valuable lifeskills, such as team building, commitment, and leadership.
Sports
Student-athletes learn skills as well as valuable lessons that endure long after leaving here: sportsmanship, leadership on and off the field, commitment to one's team or activity, critical thinking, time management, self-discipline, and enjoyment. We believe that students develop favorable habits and social attitudes, self-discipline, confidence, and esteem from recreational and physical activities.-
Adventure
Research indicates that the hands-on approach for teaching is the best way for students to learn science and mathematics. Hands On applications are designed to connect classroom learning to careers and inspire exploration through enrichment activities. Hands-on activities make learning more fun and effective for all ages. -
Academics
Enrichment courses are offered in mathematics and academic readiness. Specific topics include reading comprehension, study skills, algebra, and other mathematical levels. -
Programs At Other Schools
The V.I.P. summer program is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and services.
Programs for Summer 2009
"She has come home each day of the camps non stop talking about the staff and all the new friends she is making. She is so eager to push herself with the academics and someone has even praised her on her basketball skills, so now she wants to play basketball. She has set her self a goal of 12 behavior awards for the year, which I am sure she will surpass that goal. She is having a hard time deciding what after school programs she will attend because she loves them all."

"My sons had a great time. My younger son enjoyed the basketball games the most. My older son as well. They enjoyed the wonderful food and the variety of speakers. Thank you for all of the hard work and organization that went in to this. We hope that this opportunity will be available next year as well."
