In order to improve their understanding of the artist's challenges as a creator, a producer, and a recipient of public scrutiny, the Grade 8 Advanced Multimedia Productions students went online to look at the unique artistry of Jackson Pollock - one of America's most renowned, yet often criticized, painters.
Pollock used a colored paint and brush splatter technique on his canvases. His artistic insights are revealed during the creation phases of the project - what he referred to as "a physical performance, a unique, spontaneous and unrepeatable event." In order to understand his ideas, and to appreciate the finished work, Pollock forces us to look at the act of painting - the challenges of the creative process.
Using a Google hyperlink, the students used Flash Technology to practice Pollock's colored paint and brush splatter technique. This opportunity clearly increased their understanding of the Jackson Pollock artistic experience.
We then reviewed our M2P Project and Assessment Standards, as follows -
The M2P Project Challenge:
- Each M2P project is an artistic challenge.
- Each student brings a unique perspective to the creative process.
- With each step in the creative process, the student's personal style develops.
- The creative ideas, expressions and methods of peers are influential.
- The student's artistic insights crystallize as concepts and techniques take shape.
- The creative process that unfolds is a work of art.
The M2P Assessment Challenge:
"Comprehensive Reflection, Respectful Communication"
When we reflect on our creative work, and that of our peers, we enhance our understanding and appreciation of the impact of the creative experience in our lives. To be effective, we need to
- thoroughly analyze all aspects of the artist's perspective, performance and product; and,
- express our views clearly and respectfully
The following student blogs take the form of a letter of support and appreciation to a classmate. Each writer was asked to assess how this classmate met the M2P Project Challenge in an M2P project in which he/she was involved.
Each of the insightful and poignant letters posted here is an example of the endearing and generous character our LJMS students possess.
