Nabeel and I thought that Wikipedia was (just) an encyclopedia, until we checked out the site's main page www.wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home and discovered that Wikipedia is part of a group of online information resources. We were amazed at the wide range of projects that the Wikimedia Foundation hosts, and how useful they are.
Wikipedia - Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia. It contains over 1,806,000 articles in English, along with articles in many other languages.
Wikibooks - Wikibooks shows many open-content textbooks and other books in a variety of languages.
Wiktionary - Wiktionary is a dictionary and thesaurus that provides definitions, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms, and translations in many languages.
Wikiversity - Wikiversity is full of free learning content and activities for schools and universities.
Wikiquote - Wikiquote is a collection of quotations from a wide range of people involved in a lot of different activities. The sources are global, and the quotes are written in many languages.
Wikinews - Wikinews is a free news source that allows you to write articles about issues around the world.
Wikispecies - Wikispecies is a free directory of species around the world, including - Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Bacteria, Archaea, Protista. So far they have 101,422 species listed.
Wikisource - Wikisource is a free-content library that provides publications on a wide range of topics.
Commons - Wikimedia Commons is a site for sharing pictures, songs and other media forms.
Nabeel and I feel quite literate, knowing about The Wikemedia Foundation projects. We hope you check out these very useful resources, too!
