Issue - Using popular movies to support learning

Tiptoid -

Bruna and I love to watch popular movies, but our teachers don't show them in class because it's not easy to find movies that directly support the academic curriculum.

Well, we thought we'd show our teachers that popular movies can be an education tool. We did some online research, and discovered an education-approved website at www.teachwithmovies.com.

At this website, there is a long list of films and film topics to choose from, and there are over 270 films that come with their own learning guides. Once you select a movie, this site gives you a plot summary of that movie, along with discussion questions, class projects, and other helpful ways to connect and teach the curriculum along with the movie.

For a small annual fee, our teachers can use popular films as teaching tools to support learning, help foster social development, teach ethics, and highlight the curriculum.

Bruna and I decided to play the role of teachers, so we looked over the movie list and selected “The Lion King.” On the website, this movie has connections to science, technology, the environment, and character development traits. The moral of this movie emphasizes trustworthiness and responsibility. The website outlines discussion questions and worksheets on these character issues. Perfect!

By using the resources on this website, our teachers can now show us movies we want to see, and at the same time, teach us important lessons that support the curriculum. How cool is that?!
