Issue - How to apply higher level thinking skills to real life situations

Tiptoid -

My Multimedia Productions teacher asked me to produce a video on the topic of cyber bullying. She wanted the characters to demonstrate a real life situation, and to use higher level thinking to eventually come to the conclusion that cyber bullying is wrong.

Man oh man - this was a hard task!!!

According to Bloom's Taxonomy*, the six higher level thinking skills are –

1. KNOWLEDGE - to recall, remember, recognize previously learned facts (e.g. define, identify, list, locate, match, state, fill in the blank)

2. COMPREHENSION - to attach meaning to facts; to understand, interpret (e.g. compare, describe, discuss, explain, interpret, select, summarize, trace)

3. APPLICATION - to use, apply, transfer what you learned to other situations (e.g. choose, classify, demonstrate, illustrate, solve, use)

4. ANALYSIS - to identify parts/their order; to relate parts to each other/the whole (e.g. categorize, contrast, determine, examine, organize, question, specify)

5. SYNTHESIS - to combine what you already understand into something new (e.g. assemble, construct, create, predict, revise, support, visualize)

6. EVALUATION - to make judgments about the worth, value, quality of an idea, based on a criteria; opinion is expected to be defended (e.g. appraise, assess, estimate, judge, justify, opine, rank, support)

After much thought, and with the help of my friend Morgan, this is how I developed the storyline.

1. Knowledge -

While online, Billy receives insulting messages from an unknown person.

2. Comprehension –

Billy realizes that he is being bullied. He is surprised and upset.

3. Application –

Billy decides to send insulting messages back. He thinks this is fun. Meanwhile Jodi, the person who originally sent the bullying messages, is shocked and angry when she is bullied in return. She fights back by sending more rude messages to Billy.

4. Analysis –

Billy's mother catches Billy bullying online, and talks with him about the situation. She finds out who is on the other end of the bullying incident, and decides to telephone Jodi's mother. The mothers meet to see how they will handle the situation.

5. Synthesis –

The mothers talk with the children, who sit down together to discuss the implications of what they have done, and to figure out what they can do to create a more positive relationship.

6. Evaluation –

The children decide that cyber bullying is a dangerous activity. They judged their behavior to be unacceptable, and decided that they would not do it again. Together they look at the camera and say “Don't be a cyber bully!”

When I finally completed the project, I felt extremely proud that I had been able to figure out how to apply the thinking process to a real life situation, and send a great message to my peers at the same time.

But this was an important learning experience for me in another way. Now I understand a whole lot more about how to think like a higher level thinker!
