The future is coming for us teenagers, and it's coming fast! Now is the time for my peers and I to decide what careers we might want to have, and what we need to do to reach our goals. Here are some tips Stephanie and I plan to follow.
~ Think of a lot of different careers before narrowing your choices to 3 or 4.
~ Work hard and study in school so you have a better chance of getting into the college of your choice.
~ Look up colleges that have the kind of career training you would like. Your school Guidance counselors will help you a lot with this.
~ Volunteer for jobs in your career interest area.
~ Go on the Internet and read information on specific schools. The URL for schools ends in .edu.
~ Talk to neighborhood kids who have similar career interests. They may have already done much of the research.
~ Ask your parents if you can job shadow them on teacher work days, as well as go with one of them to work on “Take Your Kid to Work” day. Having a better understanding of the real world in general is valuable.
~ Take a Career Skills test to help you match your skills to career options.
~ Ask your teachers and counselors to make arrangements for you and your parents to meet with someone they know who works in your career choice area. That contact person might show you around and talk about his/her personal experiences. Ask lots of questions.
~ Most importantly, talk with your parents about your goals and career dreams. They may be your best mentors!
It's time to start thinking seriously about the future. As a high school friend of mine said, “If you think Grade 8 went by fast, wait until you get to High School!”
