Tiptoid -

Recently, Katie and I were talking about the drama class we are excited to be taking next fall in high school. We both want to get good parts in the play productions, so we were discussing some things we had learned in our current acting class that would help us when we go for those auditions. Along with some good advice we also got from a couple of awesome videos (see titles below), here are some auditioning tips we came up with.

1. Prepare for your audition by removing all concerns from your mind. Try to focus on the audition experience ahead of you. Do exercises (mental and physical) that have helped you relax in the past.

2. Make a plan on how you would like the scene to play out. In your mind, walk through this scenario. Picture yourself performing in the audition. Visualize a confident and successful experience. Make sure you see yourself remaining in character at all times during the scene.

3. Take a deep breath before you begin your performance audition. Stay off the script while you are speaking. This means that you must avoid reading and talking at the same time. A calm, organized, well-paced approach to your performance will help convince the director that you have patience, composure, and a professional presentation manner.

4. Perform with an appropriate balance of emotion for your character role. If your audition partner does not demonstrate expression well, inject a stimulating gesture or facial expression, along with a thought-provoking tone of voice, to prompt a more expressive response. A highly motivated actor inspires others to perform even better.

5. Stay positive. Do not argue with the director during your audition. Remember, the director is in charge, and the director has more experience – not only in the business of acting, but with regard to the way her/she envisions the play to be performed. You want to get the part, but there is also much you can learn from every audition, no matter what the result.

Auditions can be nerve-wrecking experiences, but Katie and I believe that if we focus hard on these five points, we'll have the necessary composure to convince the director that we deserve a part in the play.

Remember to use these audition tips when you prepare for your next audition.

And as they say in show biz - break a leg!
