Longfellow Middle School

SUPPLY LISTS

All Students: Hand Sanitizer and box of tissues.

Note:     One Longfellow assignment notebook will be provided by the PTA for each student.  If a replacement is needed, it will be for sale in the office until supplies run out.  All students must carry this Longfellow assignment notebook at all times, as it also contains the hall pass.  Do not tear out or fold any pages of the assignment notebook.

Reminders:
* You are responsible for the condition of any books that are issued to you to take home.  The PTA has purchased enough extra books that every student has a copy they can keep at home. They are the property of Fairfax County Public Schools and should be covered, even if they are left at home during the school year.  Do not use tape or any sticky type of contact paper to cover your books!  Brown paper grocery bags and heavy gift wrapping paper make great textbook covers.  All books are on loan and must be returned at the end of the school year or when you leave the county.  Fines are assessed for any marks or other damages to the books.
* Your teachers will let you know what other supplies you will need for your classes the first week of school.

All supplies are due on Monday, September 14, with your name on them.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Financial assistance may be provided for qualified students.
Please contact your director if you require financial assistance.

Parents will need to supply music students with the following:

  • pencil with eraser
  • one pair black dress shoes
  • uniform fee – directors will size students and order uniforms in September

Additionally, instrumentalists will need:

  • instrument in good working order   (Please contact your director if you are unsure about which brand to rent, or what to look for in an instrument.   Inferior or poorly functioning instruments can be a huge impediment to your child’s musical success, especially if your child is a beginner.)
  • music stand for home practice
  • metronome
  • nametag on case
  • soft, cleaning cloth - string players only
  • tuner – required of Symphonic wind & brass players;  for all others this item is optional

Instrument-specific items (e.g., mouthpieces, mallets, strings, shoulder pads) will be introduced to instrumental students during the opening week of school.  Parents may wish to purchase accessories only after directors have discussed these items with students.

STRING INSTRUMENT ACCESSORIES

  • MUTE   Please do not purchase the ebony, fork-like mutes as they do not attach to the instrument.

Recommended mutes include:
Roth-Sihon slide-on wire mute - effective for student model instruments
Glaesel 2-hole rubber mute - stiff enough for use on most student model instruments
Tourte rubber mute - effective if the instrument’s bridge is not too thick.  (Please note that the word “Tourte” will be imprinted on the mute.)
Spector mute function well, are easy to use but are slightly more expensive than the other brands.

  • SHOULDER PAD (violin/viola) – Viva or Kun with collapsible feet
  • ENDPIN STOP (cello/bass) – often rubber tips are sufficient to hold the instrument secure;  sometimes a rockstop is required – the “Stoppin” seems to do the best job grabbing the floor.
  • ROSIN   A new cake of rosin should be supplied as part of your rental outfit.  New rosin has a shiny surface – do NOT scratch/scrape the surface to get it started.  Intermediate & advanced students will need dark rosin (stickier than the light rosin used by beginners).  Students playing on finer, handmade instruments should probably be using a finer rosin such as “Hill” rosin.  Bass players may want to invest in some Carlsson Swedish bass rosin or the less expensive Pops’ rosin.
  • CLEANER/POLISH    Most music dealers offer cleaning kits (about $10) which include a soft cloth, polish, and cleaner.  DO NOT EVER use a commercial or household cleaner.
  • EXTRA STRINGS   Each student should always have an extra set of strings in his/her case.   In the event a string breaks, it can then be quickly and easily repaired.  Because cello & bass strings are more expensive,  you may wish to have extras of only the upper two strings which are the most likely to break (A & D for cello/G & D for bass).

♪  D’Addario “Prelude” or Super Sensitive “Red Label” – steel core strings (requires fine tuners)
♪  Thomastik Infeld “Dominant” – synthetic core strings for finer handmade instruments – less susceptible to humidity
